Introduction

The Vanda genus is found mainly in warm regions of Asia and the Pacific, growing predominantly as epiphytes, with a few terrestrial or lithophytic species (growing in soil or on rocks). With a broad distribution stretching from China to the Himalayas, Indonesia, northern Australia, and New Zealand, the genus includes more than 45 known botanical species and over 1,000 horticultural hybrids. It is an important genus in the specialist trade, both as cut flowers and as living plants for collectors.

An interesting aspect is that although flower longevity in the Orchidaceae family is often associated with petal thickness, Vanda frequently breaks this rule. Its flowers have relatively delicate petals, yet they can last for a long time. Natural shades ranging from violet to blue occur, as do veined patterns (e.g. Vanda coerulea) and spotting (e.g. Vanda tricolor, Vanda sanderiana). Although most representatives are not fragrant, there are exceptions: Vanda amesiana, Vanda denisoniana, Vanda cristata, and Vanda dearei.

In nature, Vanda prefers woody habitats, including fallen logs. Its roots do not necessarily need to penetrate a dense substrate: moisture from the air and the ability to store water in the root tissue after torrential rain can meet part of the plant's needs. Although one of the first species described was Vanda tessellata, in 1819 Robert Brown used the genus name to describe Vanda roxburghii, named after William Roxburgh.

About growing parameters

The temperatures, humidity levels, watering intervals, and fertilizer concentrations below are guidelines, not absolute limits. Species, hybrids, plant size, growing system (glass, basket, bare roots, or pot), and microclimate all affect actual needs. Adjustments should be based on the appearance of the roots and leaves, the growth rate, and the visible weight or dryness of the growing medium.

Morphology and groups

Vanda is a monopodial-growing epiphyte with tough, substantial leaves arranged in a feather-like pattern along the stem. Leaf variation broadly divides the genus into three types: broad leaves, cylindrical leaves, and tough (terete) or semi-tough (semi-terete) leaves. The closely related Ascocentrum genus and Ascocenda-type hybrids (Ascocentrum × Vanda) are also included within the same broad taxonomic group.

A frequently used classification, although not universally accepted, distinguishes four major groups: Euanthe (the Vanda sanderiana type); Trudelia (epiphytic species from the Himalayas); Holcoglossum (semi-terrestrial species from China and Indochina); and Papilionanthe (terrestrial species).

In general, Vanda species can survive without intervention (without watering or fertilizing) for approximately 4–8 weeks, depending on the climate and variety, but this does not mean it is the optimal growing routine. Most species and hybrids can flower up to 2–3 times a year; under very good conditions, resistant hybrids have been recorded flowering through even more annual cycles. Growing them is not difficult when the right environmental conditions are provided.

Humidity

Ideal humidity is approximately 60–70% during the day and 80–90% at night for rapid growth. In practice, good progress can also be achieved with a more consistent day/night level (for example, approximately 60% constant humidity), provided watering and ventilation are correct. Long-term lack of humidity leads to the gradual loss of roots, soft and wrinkled leaves (dehydration), followed by yellowing and leaf drop; flowering becomes difficult to achieve.

Growing and watering systems

Watering must take into account the genus's high water requirements: as plants grow, they absorb a larger volume of water.

Growing in a glass container is recommended especially for young or medium-sized plants. The container retains moisture for longer and creates a greenhouse effect. Practical experience shows that immersing the roots for 10–40 minutes in room-temperature water (or slightly lukewarm water, which helps with faster absorption) is often sufficient, at an approximate interval of 6–7 days. A thin layer of sphagnum or clay pebbles can be placed at the bottom of the glass container if dehydration occurs too quickly. During the warm season, spraying every few days can help, depending on the temperature and the plant's appearance.

Growing in a wooden basket without substrate can be suitable for medium-sized specimens at atmospheric humidity above approximately 70%, or for large specimens. Wood from species that retain moisture well is preferred. If the plant dries too quickly, several large pieces of bark can be added to the basket and spraying frequency increased. The watering interval is generally shorter: approximately 1–3 days, adjusted according to temperature, humidity, and ventilation.

Growing with bare roots is recommended for experienced collectors who can provide a controlled microclimate. Watering should be adjusted closely according to environmental factors and the plant's development.

Growing in substrate has become popular because it requires less frequent watering. It is especially useful for young plants or the few terrestrial species, with careful attention to moisture: standing water encourages rot. Pots containing inorganic materials (charcoal, stone, tuff, clay pebbles, or pumice) or baskets can be used. Inorganic substrate needs changing less often, sometimes only once every 4–5 years. If an organic substrate is chosen — for example, Professional substrate for Phalaenopsis (bark with controlled moisture retention), pieces of coconut husk, or large pieces of bark — it should generally be changed at least once every 2 years. At the seedling stage, Vanda can be kept in sphagnum until the root system is sufficiently developed. Watering in a pot is approximately every 6–8 days, adjusted according to the plant and microclimate.

Fertilization

Fertilization should be reduced significantly or stopped in winter, when the watering interval is also carefully controlled. In spring, the fertilization rate can be increased to stimulate growth and flowering; feeding can continue while the plant is in flower because it uses many nutrients. In terms of technique, Vanda has light requirements similar to Cattleya and Cymbidium, but it often accepts a higher nitrogen supply.

While most orchids are fertilized with 25–50% of the dose stated on the label, Vanda can generally be given 50–75% of the recommended dose, or even close to 100% for large specimens with rapid growth, many keikis, and abundant flowering — only with a quality fertilizer and after watering, to reduce the risk of root burn. A balanced 20-20-20 formula is a common reference point. Apply fertilizer after watering, not to dry roots.

Light, temperature, ventilation

Light. Vanda needs abundant, filtered light, not direct sunlight on its leaves. Excess light is indicated by yellowing and scorching; very dark green leaves usually indicate insufficient light.

Temperature. Approximate ranges are 21–30°C during the day and 10–15°C at night. Above 30°C, more frequent watering is necessary, sometimes several times a day for exposed roots. Below approximately 18°C, abundant watering increases the risk of fungal problems affecting the leaves and roots.

Ventilation is particularly important. Lack of air movement encourages fungal problems, especially at high humidity.

Practical notes

  • Vanda can be grown together with Tillandsia usneoides (Spanish moss): lightly wrapping the roots helps retain moisture.
  • In a wooden basket, the roots can be partially covered with sphagnum for better moisture retention.
  • Vanda often arrives from growers with thin “greenhouse” roots. Over time, these are lost and replaced by thicker roots with a greater capacity to retain water. The loss of thin roots is generally a normal acclimatization process.
  • The acclimatization period can last 4–12 months. The plant may not flower satisfactorily during this time; there is not necessarily any reason to panic if the roots and leaves continue to develop.

Common problems

  • Wrinkled, soft leaves = dehydration or excessively low humidity over a long period
  • Root rot = watering too frequently in a pot without drainage / low temperature + wet medium
  • Scorched leaves = direct sunlight
  • No flowers in the first year = acclimatization; check light and nutrient levels after the plant has stabilized
