Masdevallia nidifica - Characteristics and Care Guide
Botanical species of South and Central American origin, native to Costa Rica, Ecuador, Panama and Peru, belongs to the subgenus Nidificia Luer 2000. Valid synonyms are Buccella nidifica (Rchb.f.) Luer 2006 Masdevallia cyathogastra Schltr. 1918; Masdevallia tenuicauda Schltr. 1923. Sometimes, M. ventricosa is also presented as a synonym for the nidifica species, but this is found only in Ecuador, having yellow flowers, with much shorter and slightly thicker sepal appendages, and the epichile is narrowly triangular and not ovate or flabellate .
The genus Masdevallia was named in honor of the Spanish doctor Jose Masdeval, a famous botanist from the reign of King Charles III of Spain.
The appearance of this taxon is miniature, lending itself exceptionally well to terrarium-type mountings. It prefers varied climates, from cool to warm and populates in lithophilic or epiphytic habitats the thin branches of trees in humid mountain forests, at altitudes between 450 - 2500 m. This high amplitude altitudinal range probably contributes to the appearance of the high chromatic variability of this species .
The short branches are wrapped basally in 2 - 3 tubular bracts, and bear apically solitary, elliptic lanceolate leaves, approximately 5 cm long. The inflorescences appear on arched stalks of 1.5 to 5 cm long, solitary, starting from the base of the branches, on which emerge above the tips of the leaves, single flowers, 1.5 cm wide and 1.5 cm long, with sepals up to 5 cm long, with filiform appendages - which open biannually, during summer and winter. The color of the corolla is impressive, relatively translucent, white, yellow, red varieties or combinations of these colors being known.
The level of light radiation recommended for this species will be in the range of 6000 - 16000 lux, indicating a preference for shaded to moderately lit locations.
The growing temperature will be between 12 and 26 ℃, ensuring constant humidity and ventilation.
Irrigation will preferably be done daily, as it prefers constantly moist substrates.
It is recommended to keep the environmental conditions constant, without variations and without rest periods.
Since the species of the Masdevalia genus do not possess storage organs, such as pseudobulbs or thickened leaves and roots, irrigation and fertilization will have to follow a regular pattern and be administered with a constant frequency.
