Wisteria floribunda 'Longissima Alba' is a remarkable variety of Japanese wisteria, prized for its long, elegant white flowers. This vigorous climber is ideal for decorating pergolas, arches or walls, providing an impressive floral display especially in spring.

Flower appearance

The flowers of this variety are grouped in extremely long pendulous clusters , which can reach 40-60 cm or even more, being among the longest of the Wisteria species. Each cluster is formed by small, pea-shaped flowers, which gradually open from the base to the tip. Their color is a pure, brilliant white , sometimes with subtle shades of cream or pale green at the base, giving a refined appearance. The flowers exude a sweet and delicate fragrance , attracting bees and butterflies. The flowering period is in spring (April-May) , with an explosion of abundant and spectacular flowers; in mild climates, a weaker secondary flowering may also occur in summer.

Growth characteristics

  • Height : It can reach 6-9 meters or more, depending on the support and pruning, being a vigorous plant.
  • Foliage : The leaves are compound, pinnate, with 9-15 bright green leaflets, which turn golden yellow in autumn.
  • Stems : The woody stems twist clockwise and require solid support to support the weight of the clusters.

Growing conditions

  • Exposure : Prefers full sun for optimal flowering, but also tolerates light semi-shade.
  • Soil : It needs fertile, well-drained soils with neutral or slightly acidic pH; it does not tolerate very wet soils.
  • Watering : Requires regular watering in the first few years, but becomes moderately drought tolerant once established.
  • Pruning : It is essential for controlling growth and stimulating flowering. Two annual prunings are recommended: in summer (July-August), after flowering, reducing new shoots to 5-6 buds, and in winter (January-February), shortening them to 2-3 buds.

Care and resistance

  • Resistance : It is cold-resistant, but flower buds may be damaged by late spring frosts.
  • Fertilization : A phosphorus-rich fertilizer applied in spring promotes flowering; excess nitrogen should be avoided.

Origin

This variety is a Japanese selection of the Wisteria floribunda species, grown for its distinctive white flowers, as an alternative to the classic shades of purple or blue.

In the cold season, plants enter a dormant period and are shortened.
