Wisteria floribunda 'Longissima Alba' is a remarkable variety of Japanese wisteria, valued for its long, elegant white flowers. This vigorous climbing plant is ideal for decorating pergolas, arches, or walls, offering an impressive floral display especially in spring.

Flower Appearance

The flowers of this variety are grouped in very long hanging clusters, which can reach 40-60 cm or even more, being among the longest in the Wisteria species. Each cluster is made up of small, pea-shaped flowers that gradually open from the base to the tip. Their color is a pure, bright white, sometimes with subtle shades of cream or pale green at the base, giving a refined look. The flowers emit a sweet and delicate fragrance, attracting bees and butterflies. The flowering period is spring (April-May), with an explosion of abundant and spectacular flowers; in mild climates, a weaker secondary flowering may appear in summer.

Growth Characteristics

  • Height: Can reach 6-9 meters or more, depending on support and pruning, being a vigorous plant.
  • Foliage: The leaves are compound, pinnate, with 9-15 leaflets of a bright green color, turning golden-yellow in autumn.
  • Stems: The woody stems twist clockwise and require a sturdy support to bear the weight of the clusters.

Growing Conditions

  • Exposure: Prefers full sun for optimal flowering, but also tolerates light partial shade.
  • Soil: Needs fertile, well-drained soils, with neutral or slightly acidic pH; does not tolerate very wet soils.
  • Watering: Requires regular watering in the first years, but becomes moderately drought-tolerant once established.
  • Pruning: Essential for growth control and flowering stimulation. Two annual prunings are recommended: summer (July-August), after flowering, reducing new shoots to 5-6 buds, and winter (January-February), shortening them to 2-3 buds.

Care and Hardiness

  • Hardiness: It is frost-hardy, but flower buds can be affected by late spring frosts.
  • Fertilizing: A phosphorus-rich fertilizer applied in spring promotes flowering; excess nitrogen should be avoided.

Origin

This variety is a Japanese selection of the species Wisteria floribunda, cultivated for its distinctive white flowers, as an alternative to the classic shades of violet or blue.

During the cold season, plants enter a period of dormancy and are pruned back.
