Vaccinium corymbosum 'Top Hat' , also known as 'Highbush Top Hat' (Highbush Blueberry), is a blueberry cultivar in the Ericaceae family, notable for its compact size, sweet fruit, and ornamental appearance. Developed in North America, this deciduous shrub is ideal for small gardens, patios, or containers, combining culinary utility with the decorative beauty of its foliage and flowers.

Appearance of leaves, flowers and fruits

  • Leaves : The leaves are small, oval, dark green , glossy, 2-4 cm long. In autumn, they turn into attractive shades of red, orange and bronze , providing a vibrant decorative effect.
  • Flowers : In late spring (May), bell-shaped, creamy-white flowers appear in small clusters. The flowers are delicate and attractive to pollinators, especially bees.
  • Fruit : The fruits are small to medium-sized blueberries , deep blue , with a firm texture and a sweet, slightly sour taste, perfect for fresh consumption, desserts or freezing. They ripen in mid-summer (July), forming compact clusters.

Growth characteristics

  • Height and width : It grows as a dwarf, compact shrub, reaching only 50-60 cm tall and 40-50 cm wide , being one of the smallest blueberry varieties, ideal for confined spaces or planting in pots .
  • Vigor : It has slow to moderate growth, forming a round, dense bush with an orderly appearance, resembling a ball.
  • Type : It is a deciduous shrub, with fine stems, that does not produce many shoots from the root, maintaining a well-defined shape.

Growing conditions

  • Exposure : Prefers full sun for optimal fruiting, but tolerates partial shade , with slightly reduced production. A location sheltered from strong winds protects flowers and fruit.
  • Soil : Requires acidic soil (pH 4.5-5.5) , rich in organic matter , well-drained , but moisture-retaining. The addition of peat, pine needles or acidic compost is essential to maintain optimal pH.
  • Watering : It needs regular watering, especially during flowering and fruiting, to prevent the soil from drying out. A layer of organic mulch (e.g. bark or pine needles) helps retain moisture and protect the roots.
  • Pollination : It is self-fertile , producing fruit without requiring another variety, but cross-pollination with other blueberry varieties (e.g. 'Bluecrop' or 'Darrow') can increase the quantity and quality of the harvest.

Care and resistance

  • Hardiness : It is hardy to -25°C (zones 4-8), making it suitable for temperate climates, including Romania. Shallow roots may require mulch for protection in harsh winters.
  • Fertilization : Apply a fertilizer for acidophilic plants (e.g. for azaleas or rhododendrons) in early spring, in moderate amounts, to avoid overstimulating the leaves to the detriment of the fruits.
  • Pruning : Pruning is minimal due to the compact size. In the first years, remove the flowers to stimulate root development. From the third year, prune dry or weak branches in February-March to maintain shape and encourage fruiting.
  • Pests and diseases : It is resistant to most problems, but can be affected by gray mold or insects such as aphids. Good ventilation and drainage prevent diseases. The fruits can attract birds, and protective nets are useful.
  • Fauna : The flowers support pollinators such as bees, and the fruits are eaten by birds (e.g. thrushes, blackbirds) and small mammals.

Vaccinium corymbosum, the species to which the 'Top Hat' Blueberry belongs, is native to eastern North America, where it grows in swamps, acidic woodlands and wetlands. The 'Top Hat' Blueberry cultivar was developed in the USA, at Michigan State University, in the 1980s, as a hybrid between a dwarf wild blueberry and a tall blueberry, being selected for its small stature, quality fruit and adaptability to container growing.

Blueberry 'Top Hat' is a remarkable dwarf blueberry, combining sweet fruit, compactness and decorative autumn foliage. With simple care – acidic soil, sun and regular watering – this shrub is perfect for small spaces, providing tasty crops and an attractive aesthetic. It is ideal for gardeners who want an edible and ornamental plant, suitable for terraces, balconies or minimalist gardens.
