Rubus phoenicolasius, also known as Japanese raspberry or hairy raspberry , is a species of raspberry native to East Asia, which is noted for its attractive appearance, which gives it great ornamental value, and its tasty fruits. The fruits, red-orange in color, have a sweet-sour taste and can be eaten fresh or used in the preparation of juices, jams and desserts.

  • Growth type: Perennial fruiting shrub, with arching stems and thorny branches covered with red-purple hairs

  • Fruit: Red at first, turning dark red to burgundy when ripe; sweet, slightly sour, very aromatic

  • Ripening period: July–August

🌞 Growing conditions:

  • Light: Full sun for maximum productivity; tolerates partial shade

  • Soil: Fertile, well-drained, with slightly acidic to neutral pH

  • Watering: Regular during flowering and fruiting period

  • Minimum resistance temperature: Up to approx. -25°C, suitable for most areas in Romania

  • Pruning: Cut off the shoots that have borne fruit and thin out for good ventilation of the bush.

Its white flowers, with delicate petals, appear in spring and attract bees and other pollinating insects, contributing to the biodiversity of the garden ecosystem.

Although it is an interesting species from an aesthetic and gustatory point of view, Rubus phoenicolasius can become invasive in some conditions, due to its rapid growth and ability to multiply by shoots. Therefore, it is recommended to monitor the spread of this shrub and apply control measures, if necessary.
