Rhododendron 'Fireball'
Rhododendron (Mollis Azalea Grp) 'Fireball' is a striking plant due to its brightly colored flowers and dense foliage. This azalea belongs to the Mollis group, known for its hybrid azaleas that are hardy against low temperatures and have abundant blooming. 'Fireball', as its name suggests, impresses with its intense bright red colors, offering a strong contrast in gardens.
Rhododendron 'Fireball' can reach heights of about 1.2-1.5 meters and a similar spread, forming a compact and well-branched bush.
The foliage is dark green, with oval to lance-shaped leaves that can be 5-10 cm long. The leaves may show a beautiful bronze color during autumn.
The flowers are the most spectacular feature of this plant, with bright red petals and an attractive shape. The flowers appear in dense clusters at the top of the bushes from spring to early summer. 'Fireball' flowers usually bloom in May or early June, depending on the climate.
Light: Prefers partly shaded places, protected from direct midday sun, but can tolerate full sun if sufficient moisture is provided.
- Soil: The ideal soil for 'Fireball' is well-drained, acidic (pH between 4.5 and 6.0), rich in organic matter. It is important to avoid lime or alkaline soils.
- Watering: Azaleas need consistently moist soil, but not waterlogged. Watering should be adjusted according to temperature and ambient humidity, avoiding soil saturation.
- Fertilizing: Apply special fertilizers for azaleas or rhododendrons during the active growth period, following the manufacturer's instructions.
- Pruning: Pruning is done after the plant has finished blooming, to encourage branching and maintain the desired shape. Remove wilted flowers and dry or damaged branches.
- Winter protection: Although hardy to cold, in areas with harsh winters, 'Fireball' can benefit from extra protection, such as covering the base of the plant with a thick layer of mulch to protect the roots from freezing.
