Philadelphus 'Lemoinei' (Garden Jasmine 'Lemoinei' or Mock Orange 'Lemoinei') is one of the most appreciated garden jasmine hybrids, created by the famous French breeder Victor Lemoine in 1884. It is renowned for the intense and delightful fragrance of its flowers – a sweet, floral scent with notes of orange blossom and jasmine that fills the garden and can drift through open windows.

The shrub has an elegant, arching, and compact form, reaching 1.5–2.5 m in height and a similar width. The leaves are ovate-lanceolate, medium glossy green, providing a beautiful backdrop for the white flowers.

The flowers appear in late spring and early summer (May–June), white, cup- or saucer-shaped (2.5–4 cm diameter), grouped in clusters of 3–7 flowers at the ends of branches. They are extremely fragrant – one of the strongest and most pleasant scents in the Philadelphus genus. After flowering, small decorative but insignificant capsules appear.

Main features:

  • Size: 1.5–2.5 m height × 1.5–2.5 m width, elegant arching habit
  • Flowers: white, cup-shaped, very fragrant (strong scent of orange blossom/jasmine)
  • Flowering period: May–June (2–3 weeks of splendor)
  • Fragrance: exceptionally intense and long-lasting
  • Hardiness: excellent cold tolerance (down to -25°C or lower)

Simple and practical care:

  • Light: full sun or partial shade (flowers more abundantly in sun)
  • Soil: fertile, well-drained, prefers neutral to slightly alkaline soils
  • Watering: moderate – tolerates drier periods well once established
  • Pruning: group 2 – prune immediately after flowering (cut back flowering shoots, remove old wood to encourage branching)
  • Maintenance: very low, resistant to diseases and urban pollution

Recommended uses:

  • Planted near windows, doors, or terraces to enjoy the fragrance
  • Free-form hedges or mixed borders
  • Scented gardens
  • Cut flowers (hold well in a vase and scent the home)

A classic, elegant plant that is extremely generous with its fragrance. If planted in a strategic spot, you will smell its delightful scent from afar every spring! It is one of the best choices if you want a shrub with white flowers, strong fragrance, and minimal maintenance. 🌿
