Full description and specifications

Paeonia Itoh, or Itoh hybrids, are a special group of intergenetic peonies resulting from the cross between Paeonia lactiflora, a species of herbaceous peony and Paeonia suffruticosa, a species of shrub peony. These hybrids are named after the Japanese horticulturist Toichi Itoh, who made the first successful cross of this type in the 1940s.

Itoh hybrids combine the best traits of both parent species. They inherit the rich foliage, compact habit and large, full flowers from the herbaceous peonies, and the disease resistance, longevity and wide range of colors from the shrub peonies. The flowers can be of various colors, including yellow, pink, red, orange and shades of cream, sometimes with several colors in the same flower.

Itoh hybrids are prized because they have an especially long flowering period that can last from late spring to autumn and can produce more flowers on a single stem than their parent types. The stems are sturdy and can support large flowers without bending over. After flowering, the plants maintain an attractive appearance thanks to their green and healthy foliage, which remains decorative until winter.
