Maxillaria sophronitis, also known as Ornithidium sophronitis, is a miniature orchid from Central America, with compact growth and intensely colored flowers. It is suitable for a small pot or an airy basket, where the roots remain healthy and the plant can form a dense clump.

Light and temperature. It prefers medium to bright, filtered light, without harsh direct sunlight. Intermediate temperatures, good ventilation, and avoiding overheating support steady growth.

Watering and fertilizing. Water when the substrate is nearly dry, without allowing the roots to remain completely dry for extended periods. During the active growth period, apply diluted orchid fertilizer.

Substrate and repotting. Choose a fine, airy mix with good drainage; substrate for vigorous-growing orchids can be adapted with finer material. Repot when new roots appear and avoid dividing a small plant.

Signs to watch for. Dehydrated leaves indicate insufficient watering or damaged roots; soft bases are a sign of excess water.
