Mammillaria decipiens subsp. camptotricha – Bird’s Nest Cactus

Mammillaria decipiens subsp. camptotricha (syn. Mammillaria camptotricha) is a miniature cactus native to Queretaro, Mexico, valued especially for its unusual spination. The commercial name Mammillaria camptotricha is very widespread, although the accepted name indicated by LLIFLE is Mammillaria decipiens subsp. camptotricha.

The plant develops long, prominent tubercles, from whose areoles emerge very thin, long and twisted spines that intertwine as the plant grows. In mature specimens, this web of spines can almost completely surround the cactus body, which is where the common name Bird's Nest Cactus comes from.

It tends to produce numerous offsets from the base and can eventually form compact, flattened and highly decorative clumps. The flowers are small, cream-white to greenish-white and appear among the tubercles, being much more discreet than the plant's spination.

🌞 Growing conditions and care

• Light: prefers very bright light and can receive gentle direct sunlight. Plants initially grown in a greenhouse should be gradually acclimatized to intense direct exposure.
• Substrate: very well-drained and predominantly mineral, formulated for cacti and succulents.
• Watering: moderate during the active growing period, only after the substrate has dried completely or almost completely. It is important that no stagnant water remains around the roots.
• Winter: watering should be reduced drastically, especially if the plant is kept at lower temperatures.
• Humidity: low to moderate, with good ventilation.
• Temperature: prefers high temperatures during the growing season. Cooler, drier winter conditions encourage compact growth.
• Fertilization: light feeding during the active growing period, using fertilizer for cacti and succulents.

The shape, length, density and degree of twisting of the spines may naturally vary from one specimen to another and depending on the plant's age and growing conditions. The plant is sold without flowers.

Cacti may have scars, superficial spots, signs of lignification, broken spines or missing spines, occurring naturally during growth or as a result of handling and transport. These cosmetic imperfections do not normally affect the plant's viability. Handle the plant carefully because of its spines.
