Ludisia discolor var. alba is a selection of the jewel orchid Ludisia discolor, a terrestrial (occasionally lithophytic) species found from northern India to Southeast Asia, including China and Vietnam, in humid forests. It is grown mainly for its velvety foliage, not just for its flowers. The stems are fleshy, often reddish, and 20–25 cm long; the elliptic-lanceolate leaves have contrasting veins against a dark background. The white flowers, approximately 2 cm in size, appear on 10–40 cm flower spikes and usually last 2–3 weeks.

The Alba selection has lighter, albino-like foliage, with the same growth habit and cultivation requirements as the type.

It requires shade or filtered light, approximately 8,000–10,000 lux, with no direct sun on the leaves. Typical indoor temperatures are suitable; keep it away from radiators and cold drafts. It benefits from air movement: stagnant air combined with wet leaves increases the risk of spotting. High humidity is beneficial, but many specimens adapt to moderate humidity if the substrate and ventilation are appropriate.

Water frequently, but allow the top layer of the substrate to dry out between waterings. Do not leave water in the saucer or decorative cachepot. From autumn onward, gradually reduce the watering frequency. During active growth, fertilize with a diluted solution after watering, using orchid fertilizer. In winter, if growth slows, reduce watering and fertilization without allowing the plant to remain completely dry for weeks.

Choose a shallow, wide pot with good drainage. The substrate should be loose, with moderate water retention. A suitable option is the substrate for Ludisia, Vanilla and Paphiopedilum. Repot when new roots appear or when the potting mix starts to break down. It is easily propagated from stem cuttings in moderate warmth and stable humidity.

The leaves are most commonly damaged by direct sunlight, water left on the leaves overnight, stagnant air, overwatering, or extreme dryness. It does not need to flower to be a good plant: many people grow it for its foliage, while the flowers are an added bonus.
