Hypoestes phyllostachya , also known as the " freckle plant " , is a perennial ornamental plant in the family Acanthaceae , native to Madagascar, but also widespread in other tropical regions of Africa and Asia. It is particularly appreciated for its brightly colored foliage, being cultivated both indoors and in gardens, in warm climates.

Botanical characteristics:

Habit: herbaceous plant, small to medium in size, with compact and branched growth. In the natural environment it can reach 50-60 cm, but in ornamental culture it is maintained at heights of 20-30 cm by pruning.

Leaves: oval, opposite, with a slightly pointed tip, having a soft texture and smooth edges. The surface of the leaves is covered with spots or splashes in bright shades - pink, red, white or purple , contrasting with the base green.

Flowers: small, tubular, pale purple or lilac, relatively insignificant compared to the foliage. They appear in summer, but are rare in indoor culture and often removed to stimulate vegetative growth.

Roots: fibrous, superficial, well adapted to growing in pots.

Growing conditions:

Light: Prefers bright indirect light. In insufficient light, the foliage becomes greener and loses its specific contrast. Avoid direct sunlight, which can burn the leaves.

Temperature: ideal between 18–24°C. Does not tolerate cold or cold drafts.

Soil: slightly acidic to neutral, well-drained, based on peat and perlite.

Watering: Regular, keeping the soil slightly moist but not waterlogged. It tolerates short-term drought, but the leaves will drop quickly.

Humidity: Prefers moderate to high atmospheric humidity. In dry environments, periodic spraying is useful.

Pruning: It is recommended to prune the tips to stimulate branching and prevent elongated growth.
