Hoya brevialata - fragrant flowers (sweet scent)

Hoya brevialata is an accepted species endemic to Sulawesi, published in 2001 by Kleijn and van Donkelaar. It is a trailing or pendulous epiphyte with round or oval, convex, firm, light green foliage. Under good growing conditions, it produces umbels of small, star-shaped flowers ranging from almost white to reddish, with a red and yellow corona. The flowers are fragrant, with a sweet note. Its growth habit makes it suitable for hanging baskets or growing on a support. It has been confused with Hoya incurvula.

Foliage and growth. The leaves are round or oval, convex, firm, and attached to a short petiole. In cultivation, they are usually a few centimetres long; their size varies with age. Young shoots may be shortly pubescent. In intense light, the foliage may turn yellow or red; this coloration is not variegation. The stems are thin, forming trailing or pendulous clumps, and can be allowed to cascade.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers appear in umbels of approximately 15–25. The corolla is small, star-shaped, reflexed, and ranges from almost white to reddish; the corona is red and yellow. The flowers are fragrant, with a sweet note. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Botanical identity. The accepted name is Hoya brevialata Kleijn & Donkelaar, published in 2001. It grows as an epiphyte in a humid tropical biome. It is not the same taxon as Hoya incurvula; the two have often been confused in sources. The common names Lady’s Tears, wax flower, or porcelain flower are commercial labels for Hoya, not botanical synonyms.
