Euphorbia mayurnathanii f. variegata is a rare succulent plant from the spurge family, valued for its column-like shape and unique variegation, with green and yellow stems. Considered extinct in the wild, native to the Palghat Gap region of India, this variety is cultivated for its exotic beauty and is ideal as a houseplant, for succulent collections, or rock gardens.

Appearance of Leaves and Flowers

  • Leaves: The leaves are small, green, delicate, and appear temporarily at the tips of the stems, falling off quickly but regenerating rapidly. The stems are the main decorative element, a deep green with well-defined ribs and yellow or cream variegation, varying on each branch, giving a unique look.
  • Flowers: The flowers are small, yellow, appearing in summer, but are rare indoors. They do not have significant ornamental value, with the focus being on the variegated stems.

Growth Characteristics

  • Height and Width: Reaches 20-40 cm in height and 15-30 cm in width in pots, but can grow up to 1 m under optimal conditions, branching in a tree-like form at maturity.
  • Vigor: Slow but steady growth, with columnar stems resembling a cactus, though it is a succulent. It is compact and suitable for small spaces.
  • Type: Perennial succulent, evergreen.

Growing Conditions

  • Light: Prefers strong indirect light or partial sun. Ideal near a south- or east-facing window. Can tolerate direct sun but must be protected from burns in hot climates.
  • Soil: Grows in well-drained, sandy or rocky soils with neutral pH (6.5-7.5). Use a cactus mix with perlite or vermiculite.
  • Watering: Water sparingly, once every 10-14 days, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. Avoid overwatering, which causes root rot.
  • Temperature: Hardy in zones 10-11 (down to 5°C). Prefers daytime temperatures of 21-29°C and 15°C at night. In Romania, it is grown as a houseplant, protected from frost.

Care and Hardiness

  • Hardiness: Very drought- and neglect-tolerant but sensitive to excessive moisture. May be affected by mites or fungi; inspect regularly and treat with organic fungicides. Tolerates urban pollution well.
  • Fertilizing: Does not require frequent feeding. Apply a diluted cactus fertilizer (e.g., 3-1-2) once every two months in spring and summer, only if the plant has not been repotted.
  • Pruning: Cut damaged or dry branches with sterile tools to avoid infections. Handle carefully due to toxic sap.
  • Propagation: Propagated by stem cuttings, cut and dried for a few days before planting in moist substrate.
  • Warning: The milky white sap is toxic and irritating to skin and eyes. Wear gloves when handling and keep away from children and animals.

Euphorbia mayurnathanii f. variegata is ideal for succulent collections, decorative pots, or rock gardens. Its variegated stems add a focal point in modern, minimalist, or bohemian decors. It pairs well with other succulents like aloe or agave and is suitable for windowsills or terrariums.

Origin
