Laurus nobilis, commonly known as bay laurel or laurel, is an emblematic plant of the Mediterranean region, appreciated since ancient times both for its beauty and for its symbolic and practical value. Considered a symbol of victory, glory, and success, the laurel was used in Antiquity to make the famous wreaths awarded to victors, retaining its association with elegance and prestige to this day.

Today, Laurus nobilis is cultivated both as an evergreen ornamental plant and as an aromatic plant. Its lanceolate, leathery, dark green, glossy leaves are intensely fragrant and traditionally used to flavor culinary dishes.

Bay laurel tolerates pruning and shaping very well and can be grown as a shrub, hedge, or tree on a trunk with a compact crown, making it an excellent choice for terraces, courtyards, gardens, and large containers.

• Light: prefers a sunny or partially shaded position. Good light promotes compact growth and dense foliage.
• Substrate: fertile, loose, and well-drained. Bay laurel tolerates different soil types but does not tolerate water stagnation around the roots.
• Watering: regular during the warm season, allowing the surface layer of the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. Well-established plants become relatively tolerant of short periods of drought.
• Fertilization: can be fertilized periodically during the active growing season, in spring and summer.
• Pruning: tolerates pruning very well. The crown can be shaped periodically to maintain a compact and balanced form.
• Growing in pots: adapts very well to container cultivation, provided there is effective drainage. As it develops, the plant should be gradually transplanted into larger containers.

❄️ Resistance to low temperatures

Laurus nobilis is a Mediterranean plant with moderate cold tolerance. Well-established plants grown in the ground can tolerate temperatures of approximately -7°C under favorable conditions, but actual hardiness depends on the duration of the frost, wind, soil moisture, position, and maturity of the specimen.

In regions with harsher winters, a sheltered position and protection of the root area with mulch are recommended.

Specimens grown in pots are much more vulnerable to frost, as their roots are exposed to low temperatures from all directions. Containers should be protected or moved to a bright, frost-free location when temperatures drop significantly below 0°C.

For Laurus nobilis, we recommend a fertile, airy, and well-drained substrate that retains enough moisture for the plant's development while allowing excess water to drain quickly.

For specimens grown permanently in pots, drainage is essential, especially during the cold season.

As an evergreen plant, specimens may have spots, scratches, dry edges or tips, small breaks, discoloration, or other aesthetic imperfections resulting from growing conditions, handling, transportation, or adaptation to new environmental conditions. After a change of environment, the plant may lose some of its older leaves and produce new foliage once it has acclimatized. These aspects do not normally affect the plant's viability.
