Clematis 'Broughton Star' is a remarkable variety of the Clematis montana species, valued for its abundant, fragrant flowers and striking decorative appearance. This vigorous climbing plant is ideal for covering fences, walls, pergolas, or other tall structures, bringing a splash of color and elegance to any garden.

Flower Appearance

  • Shape and Color: The flowers are semi-double, with petals of a deep plum-pink, almost red, featuring darker veins that give them depth and texture. The color is often compared to "crushed strawberries," highlighting its rich and vibrant tone.
  • Size: Each flower measures between 6 and 10 cm in diameter, large enough to stand out even from a distance.
  • Blooming Period: It blooms abundantly from May to June, offering a burst of color at the start of summer. Depending on the climate, flowering may begin in April or extend until September.
  • Scent: The flowers emit a subtle fragrance, attracting pollinators such as bees and butterflies.

Foliage

  • Color: Young leaves have a bronze shade, which gradually turns into a dark green as the season progresses, adding an interesting contrast.
  • Shape: The leaves are trifoliate, characteristic of the Clematis montana species, and are arranged alternately on the stems.

Growth Characteristics

  • Vigour: It grows quickly, reaching heights of 4.5-6 meters in one season, making it perfect for covering large areas.
  • Growth Type: As a climbing plant, it requires support (trellis, fence, or tree) to develop harmoniously.
  • Pruning: It belongs to pruning group 1, flowering on old wood. It does not require regular pruning, but if needed, it can be pruned immediately after flowering.

Growing Conditions

  • Sun Exposure: Prefers full sun or partial shade, with roots ideally placed in shade and the upper part exposed to light.
  • Soil: Needs rich, well-drained soil with a neutral or slightly acidic pH, kept moist but without excess water.
  • Watering: Requires regular watering, especially during dry periods.
  • Hardiness: Tolerates temperatures down to -20°C, suitable for temperate climates.

Garden Use

Clematis 'Broughton Star' is excellent for decorating fences, walls, or pergolas and can grow through trees or large shrubs. Its flowers and attractive foliage make it a focal point in the garden and can be combined with other climbing plants for a harmonious effect.

Care

  • Planting: It is recommended to plant with the stem buried 5-8 cm below soil level to encourage the development of shoots from the base.
  • Fertilizing: Benefits from balanced fertilizers applied during the growing season.

Created in 1988 by Vince and Sylvia Denny from England, this variety received the Certificate of Merit from the British Clematis Society in 1998 due to its exceptional qualities. With proper care, Clematis 'Broughton Star' becomes a spectacular and long-lasting presence in the garden.

During the cold season, plants are sold shortened and without leaves.
