Clematis 'Tranquilite' (Evipo111), also known as Boulevard® Tranquilité™, is a compact hybrid cultivar from the Ranunculaceae family, developed by the renowned horticulturist Raymond Evison. This perennial clematis, with abundant flowers, is ideal for small gardens, terraces, and containers due to its compact stature and delicate warm lilac-blue flowers. Launched at the Chelsea Flower Show 2018, Clematis 'Tranquilite' is valued for its ability to brighten shaded areas and for its long flowering period.

Leaf and Flower Appearance

  • Leaves: The leaves are compound, a dark green with 3-5 glossy oval leaflets, forming a dense backdrop for the flowers. The foliage is healthy, disease-resistant, and provides an attractive contrast to the pale flowers.
  • Flowers: The flowers are single or semi-double (the first blooms in May-June may be semi-double, later ones single), medium-sized (7-10 cm), star-shaped, with overlapping petals in a subtle pale lilac or lavender blue shade, featuring a white-cream stripe in the center. The petal edges are slightly wavy, and the reddish-brown anthers add an elegant detail. Flowering begins in May-June on old wood, continuing on new growth until September-October, providing a long floral display.
  • Fragrance: The flowers have a delicate, faint scent that adds a subtle charm.

Growth Characteristics

  • Height and Width: Grows up to 1.2-1.5 meters tall (some sources indicate 4-5 feet, i.e., 1.2-1.5 m) and a width of 0.6-1 meter, making it one of the most compact clematis. It has an upright growth habit, with twining stems that cling to supports via petioles.
  • Vigor: Moderately fast growth, forming a dense bush, ideal for small spaces.
  • Type: Deciduous perennial with woody stems, classified in Pruning Group 3 (flowers on new wood).

Growing Conditions

  • Exposure: Prefers partial shade or semi-shade, excellent for north-facing walls or shaded areas. Tolerates partial sun (4-6 hours/day), but intense direct sunlight can fade the flowers. Indirect light enhances the delicate petal hues.
  • Soil: Requires fertile, well-drained soil with consistent moisture but no waterlogging. A neutral to alkaline pH (6.5-7.5) is ideal. Plant with the crown 5-8 cm below soil level to encourage root growth.
  • Watering: Water regularly, keeping the soil moist, especially in the first year and during dry periods. In containers, water weekly (about 1 glass of water); in the ground, every 10-15 days.
  • Temperature: Hardy in zones 4-9 (down to -30°C), suitable for temperate climates including Romania. Mulch in winter in colder areas to protect roots.

Care and Resistance

  • Hardiness: Very resistant to cold, diseases, and pests such as deer and rabbits. Attracts hummingbirds and bees with its flowers.
  • Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer (e.g., 10-10-10) in spring and monthly during the growing season. Clematis are “heavy feeders” benefiting from regular feeding.
  • Pruning: Belongs to Pruning Group 3. Cut all stems back to 15-30 cm above ground in February-March, leaving 1-2 pairs of healthy buds, as it blooms on new wood. Remove faded flowers for a tidy appearance, though deadheading is not mandatory.
  • Pests and Diseases: Rarely affected but may develop powdery mildew in damp, poorly ventilated conditions. Check for spider mites or aphids and treat with insecticidal soap if needed.
  • Propagation: Propagated by cuttings or layering (bending branches into soil to root), preferably in spring.

Uses

Clematis 'Tranquilite' is ideal for containers, terraces, balconies, or small gardens due to its compact size. It can be trained on trellises, fences, obelisks, or allowed to climb through spring/autumn-flowering shrubs for contrast. The pale flowers brighten shaded areas, perfect for north-facing walls or dark corners. It pairs beautifully with plants like hosta, ferns, or pink clematis such as 'Sarah-Elizabeth' for a pastel effect.

Origin

Developed by Raymond Evison in the UK (2019), 'Tranquilite' is part of the Boulevard® collection, known for compact clematis with abundant flowering. It was launched at the Chelsea Flower Show 2018, quickly gaining popularity due to its versatility and subtle colors.
