Clematis 'Tranquilite' (Evipo111), also known as Boulevard® Tranquilité™ , is a compact hybrid cultivar in the Ranunculaceae family, developed by renowned horticulturist Raymond Evison. This perennial, abundantly flowering clematis is ideal for small gardens, patios and containers, thanks to its small stature and delicate, warm lilac-blue flowers. Launched at the 2018 Chelsea Flower Show, Clematis 'Tranquilite' is appreciated for its ability to brighten shady areas and for its long flowering period.

Appearance of leaves and flowers

• Leaves : The leaves are compound, dark green , with 3-5 oval, glossy leaflets, which form a dense background for the flowers. The foliage is healthy, disease resistant and provides an attractive contrast to the pale flowers.
• Flowers : The flowers are simple or semi-double (the first flowers in May-June can be semi-double, the later ones simple), medium-sized (7-10 cm), star-shaped, with overlapping petals of a pale lilac or subtle lavender-blue , with a creamy-white band in the center. The edges of the petals are slightly wavy, and the reddish-brown anthers add an elegant detail. Flowering begins in May-June on old wood, continuing on new growth until September-October , providing a long period of floral display.
• Fragrance : The flowers have a delicate, faint fragrance that adds a subtle charm.

Growth characteristics

• Height and width : It grows to 1.2-1.5 meters tall (some sources indicate 4-5 feet, i.e. 1.2-1.5 m) and a width of 0.6-1 meter , being one of the most compact clematis. It has an upright growth, with voluble stems that cling to supports by petioles.
• Vigor : Moderately fast growth, forming a dense bush, ideal for small spaces.
• Type : Perennial, deciduous plant with woody stems, classified in Pruning Group 3 (blooms on new wood).

Growing conditions

• Exposure : Prefers semi-shade or partial shade , making it excellent for north-facing walls or shaded areas. Tolerates partial sun (4-6 hours/day), but intense direct sun can fade the flowers. Indirect light accentuates the delicate hues of the petals.
• Soil : Requires fertile, well-drained soil with consistent moisture but not stagnant. A neutral to alkaline pH (6.5-7.5) is ideal. Plant with the crown 5-8 cm below ground level to encourage root growth.
• Watering : Water regularly , keeping the soil moist, especially in the first year and during dry periods. In containers, water weekly (about 1 glass of water); in the ground, every 10-15 days.
• Temperature : Hardy in zones 4-9 (down to -30°C), suitable for temperate climates, including Romania. Requires mulch in winter in colder areas to protect roots.

Care and resistance

• Hardiness : Very resistant to cold, disease and pests such as deer and rabbits. Attracts hummingbirds and bees due to its flowers.
• Fertilization : Apply a balanced fertilizer (e.g. 10-10-10) in the spring and monthly during the growing season. Clematis are "feeders" and benefit from regular fertilization.
• Pruning : Part of Pruning Group 3. Cut all stems back to 6-12 inches (15-30 cm) from the ground in February-March , keeping 1-2 pairs of healthy buds, as it blooms on new wood. Remove spent flowers for a neat appearance, although deadheading is not mandatory.
• Pests and Diseases : Rarely affected, but may develop powdery mildew in damp, poorly ventilated conditions. Inspect for mites or aphids and treat with insecticidal soap if necessary.
• Propagation : Propagate by cuttings or layering (branches bent into the soil to form roots), preferably in spring.

Use

Clematis 'Tranquilite' is ideal for containers , patios , balconies or small gardens , due to its compact size. It can be trained on trellises , fences , obelisks or allowed to climb through spring/autumn flowering shrubs for contrast. The pale flowers brighten up shady areas, making it perfect for north-facing walls or dark corners. It combines beautifully with plants such as hostas, ferns or pink clematis, such as 'Sarah-Elizabeth', for a pastel effect.
