Camellia × williamsii ‘E.G. Waterhouse’ is an evergreen shrub, valued for its double pale pink flowers, up to 10 cm in diameter. This variety was originally developed in 1923 at Caerhays Castle, Cornwall, by John Charles Williams, by crossing the species Camellia japonica and Camellia saluenensis.

Care instructions:

Light: Prefers partly shaded or fully shaded places, making it ideal for gardens facing north or west. The plant should be kept, as much as possible, away from strong summer sun that can burn its leaves and buds.

Soil: Requires acidic or neutral, well-drained soil, rich in organic matter.

Watering: Keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid excess water which can cause root rot.

Protection: Place the plant in a spot sheltered from cold and dry winds, as buds and flowers can be damaged by frost and cold winds.

Mulching: Apply a layer of leaf or shredded bark mulch at the base of the plant to retain moisture and protect the roots.

Pruning: After flowering, perform light pruning to maintain shape and remove damaged or diseased branches.

Flowering: Camellia × williamsii ‘E.G. Waterhouse’ generally blooms from late winter to spring, usually between February and April, depending on the climate.

6 and 10 weeks, depending on environmental conditions and plant health. Unlike other camellia species (Camellia sasanqua), which can also bloom in autumn, ‘E.G. Waterhouse’ does not bloom in autumn, being a variety specific to spring.

To extend flowering, it is recommended to keep the plant or plant it in a partly shaded place, ensure constant moisture, and protect the buds from late frosts.

Frost resistance:

‘E.G. Waterhouse’ is hardy in zones 7-8, tolerating temperatures down to -15°C. However, in regions with late frosts, it is advisable to protect the plant from the morning sun to prevent damage to buds and flowers.
