Pseudolarix bonsai, also known as Pseudolarix amabilis or golden spruce, is a tree native to East Asia, prized in bonsai art for its attractive foliage and beautiful fall color change. It is a deciduous tree, with leaves that turn gold or orange before falling, making it a great specimen in bonsai collections.

Description: Pseudolarix amabilis is a slow grower and can be shaped into various stylistic forms in bonsai art. The leaves are similar to those of conifers, but differ in that they are lost in the cold season. The cones are small and spherical, adding an additional decorative element.

Care:

  1. Light: Pseudolarix bonsai prefers bright light, but should be protected from direct sun in the summer to avoid burning the leaves. The ideal placement would include a few hours of direct sun in the morning or evening, with partial shade during the day.

  2. Watering: Watering should be regular and adapted to the season. The soil should be kept moist, but not saturated. Avoid letting water stagnate in the saucer under the pot.

  3. Humidity: Although it withstands variable humidity conditions well, spraying the foliage can help, especially during hot, dry summers or if the bonsai is kept indoors.

  4. Fertilization: Fertilize from spring to fall with a balanced fertilizer, specially formulated for bonsai, according to the instructions on the package.

  5. Repotting: Repotting is done every 2-3 years, in the spring, before the plant begins to actively grow. This involves cutting back the roots and replacing the soil completely to ensure a fresh and healthy environment.

  6. Protection from cold: As it is a deciduous tree, Pseudolarix bonsai should be protected during the winter in cold climates. It may require shelter in a cool but frost-free location.
