A watery lesion that visibly enlarges from one day to the next must be treated as an emergency. Black rot can advance quickly through leaves, pseudobulbs, rhizomes, or the crown, especially when the plant is exposed to heat and humidity. Early intervention can stop the spread—waiting a few days can make the difference between losing one leaf and losing the entire plant.

What black rot is
Black rot in orchids is frequently associated with Pythium and Phytophthora. These are oomycetes, sometimes called “water molds,” rather than true fungi. The distinction matters: not every ordinary fungicide is effective against them, and the diagnosis should not be reduced to the idea of a “black spot on the leaf.”
These pathogens spread easily through water. Their mobile spores, called zoospores, use the film of water on leaves, runoff, splashes, or very wet substrate to reach plant tissue. Therefore, warm and humid periods, overhead watering, and insufficient ventilation increase the risk.
Cattleya and its hybrids are often mentioned among susceptible orchids, but the problem can occur in many genera. Young plants, new growth, and plants already stressed by shipping, cold, or damaged roots are more vulnerable.
Signs that distinguish it
The lesion often begins as a small, wet, translucent spot. It then turns brown to black, becomes soft, and quickly increases in size. The edge may be yellow, and the tissue may release liquid when pressed. On a leaf, the spot can advance more in a single day than you would expect from a simple mechanical injury.
In mature plants, the condition may begin on leaves, pseudobulbs, or roots. In young plants, it may appear near the base and cause the new growth to collapse. In Phalaenopsis, Vanda, and other monopodial orchids, a lesion approaching the crown or growing point requires quick action.
Not every dark-colored tissue is black rot. Sunburn is usually dry and remains localized; cold damage appears after exposure to an unsuitable temperature; a bacterial problem may be softer and have an unpleasant odor. If the diagnosis is unclear, treat the plant as potentially contagious: isolate it, stop spraying the leaves, and observe how quickly the spot develops.

How it reaches the plant
The pathogens can be transmitted by watering plants in the same container (by immersion), splashes projected from one pot to another, substrate, pots, and contaminated tools. A plant kept directly on the ground outdoors is more likely to receive splashes of contaminated soil or water; outdoors, hanging pots reduce this risk.
Indoors, the problem often appears after a simple combination: water left between the leaves or in the crown, substrate that dries slowly, crowded plants, and still (stratified) air. A plant does not have to be “dying” to become infected, but stress reduces its immunity and its ability to contain the lesion.
What to do immediately
Isolate the plant. Move it away from the other pots and do not use the same watering water or containers for other plants. Stop spraying the leaves and do not allow runoff to circulate between pots.
Prepare clean tools. Use a thoroughly cleaned and sterilized blade or pair of scissors. Sterilize again between cuts and before moving on to another plant. Remove fallen leaves, spent flowers, and substrate debris from around the pot.
Monitor the direction of the lesion. A spot advancing toward the crown, rhizome, or growing point is not a problem you can leave “to resolve on its own.” You must intervene while the lesion is still limited.
Treating the affected tissue
Cut away the affected part with a small margin of tissue that appears healthy. Do not cut through the diseased area and then directly through the clean area with the same tool. Examine the cut surface: if the watery discoloration continues inside, remove a little more tissue.
In sympodial orchids, such as many Cattleya, you may need to remove an entire affected leaf or cut lower, toward the pseudobulb or rhizome, until you reach firm tissue. In Phalaenopsis or Vanda, the priority is to stop the spread before the lesion reaches the growing point.
After treatment, keep the plant in a place with good ventilation, light suited to the species, and no water on the cut area. Do not overwater it “to help it recover,” and do not fertilize it until it has stabilized. Plant protection products should be selected only after diagnosis and strictly according to the product instructions; chemical treatment cannot restore tissue that has already been destroyed.
Prevention: controlled watering, hygiene, and ventilation
Do not allow water to remain on the leaves or in the crown overnight. Water in a way that gives the plant time to dry off, especially when the temperature is low or ventilation is limited. Empty water from cachepots and saucers, and do not let pots sit in water.
Leave space between pots. Ventilation dries surfaces more quickly and reduces indirect splashing between plants. Regularly clean growing areas, trays, and places where plant debris accumulates. When repotting, use clean containers and suitable substrate that allows water to drain and roots to receive air.
Inspect new plants. Check young leaves, the plant base, pseudobulbs, and visible roots. Keep a new or suspect plant separate until you are sure it is stable. After shipping or repotting, adjust watering to the actual drying rate, not the previous schedule.
