Vaccinium corymbosum 'Toro' , also known as 'Highbush Toro' (Highbush Blueberry), is a cultivar of blueberry in the Ericaceae family, prized for its large, sweet berries and ornamental foliage. Native to North America, this deciduous shrub is ideal for gardens due to its abundant production of large, sweet berries and vibrant fall colors. It is a popular choice for fresh consumption, desserts, or preserves.

Appearance of leaves, flowers and fruits

  • Leaves : The leaves are oval, dark green , glossy, 4-5 cm long. In autumn, they turn into spectacular shades of bright red , adding decorative value to the shrub.
  • Flowers : In late spring (May), bell-shaped, pale pink fading to white flowers appear in clusters. The flowers are attractive to pollinators, especially bees and butterflies.
  • Fruit : The fruit is a large , deep sky-blue berry with a firm texture and a sweet taste, excellent for fresh consumption or in desserts. It ripens in mid-summer (July), forming heavy clusters. The fruit is larger than other varieties, and is considered some of the tastiest.

Growth characteristics

  • Height and width : It grows as an erect, compact shrub, reaching 1.5-2 meters tall and 1.5 meters wide , making it suitable for small gardens or containers.
  • Vigor : It has moderate growth, with a dense, branched structure that forms a neat bush.
  • Type : It is a deciduous, multi-stemmed shrub that does not form extensive colonies, but may produce a few shoots from the root.

Growing conditions

  • Exposure : Prefers full sun for optimal fruiting, but tolerates partial shade , with slightly reduced production. A location sheltered from strong winds is ideal.
  • Soil : Requires an acidic soil (pH 4.5-5.5) , rich in humus , well-drained , but which retains moisture. It is recommended to add peat or acidic compost to adjust the soil pH.
  • Watering : It needs regular watering, especially during flowering and fruiting, to prevent the soil from drying out. A layer of organic mulch (e.g. bark or pine needles) helps maintain moisture.
  • Pollination : Although self-fertile , cross-pollination with other blueberry varieties with a similar flowering period (e.g. 'Duke' or 'Bluecrop') increases production and fruit size.

Care and resistance

  • Hardiness : It is resistant to temperatures down to -25°C (zones 4-8), making it suitable for temperate climates, including Romania. It tolerates winters well, but may require protection in areas with cold winds.
  • Fertilization : Apply a specific fertilizer for acidophilic plants (e.g. for rhododendrons) in early spring, avoiding excess nitrogen which favors leaves to the detriment of fruit.
  • Pruning : In the first two years, remove the flowers to encourage root and branch development. From the third year, prune dead, weak or old branches in February-March to maintain shape and stimulate fruiting.
  • Pests and diseases : May be affected by fungi (e.g. gray mold) or insects (e.g. aphids). Good ventilation and avoiding overwatering prevent problems. The fruits attract birds, so protective nets can be useful.
  • Fauna : The fruits are eaten by birds (e.g. blackbirds, thrushes) and small mammals, and the flowers support pollinators such as bees and butterflies.
