Afin pitic si productiv - Vaccinium corymbosum 'Blue Suede'
Vaccinium corymbosum 'Blue Suede' , also known as the 'Blue Suede blueberry', is a highbush blueberry cultivar in the Ericaceae family, developed as part of the BrazelBerries® (now Bushel and Berry®) series for small gardens and containers. Introduced for its large, sweet fruit and decorative appearance, this variety is ideal for home gardens, patios or balconies, due to its compact stature, attractive foliage and high productivity.
Appearance of leaves, flowers and fruits
- Leaves : The leaves are oval, 3-6 cm long, glossy green in spring and summer, turning to shades of red, orange and purple in autumn, providing a colorful spectacle. The foliage is dense, contributing to the ornamental value.
- Flowers : The flowers are small, white, campanulate, 5-8 mm long, grouped in clusters, appearing in April-May . They are self-fertile, but production is maximized with cross-pollination (e.g. with 'Bluecrop' or 'Duke'). They attract bees and bumblebees.
- Fruits : The fruits are large, round blueberries , 1-2 cm, of an intense blue color , with a waxy rind. They have a firm, juicy pulp, with a sweet, slightly acidic taste, ideal for fresh consumption, desserts, jams or freezing. The harvest begins in July and continues until August , producing up to 2-4 kg/bush at maturity.
Growth characteristics
- Height and width : Grows to 0.6-1 meter tall and 0.6-1 meter wide , with a compact, rounded habit, perfect for containers or small gardens.
- Vigor : Slow to moderate growth, with erect, branched stems that do not require support. Forms a dense, aesthetic bush.
- Type : Deciduous, evergreen shrub with superficial roots, ideal for ornamental and productive cultivation.
Growing conditions
- Exposure : Prefers full sun (6+ hours/day) for sweet, abundant fruit, but tolerates partial shade , where production and leaf color may be reduced. A sunny position maximizes blueberry flavor.
- Soil : Requires acidic soil (pH 4.5-5.5), well-drained , rich in organic matter. A mixture of peat, compost and sand is ideal. In containers, use soil for acidophilic plants (e.g. rhododendrons). Calcareous soils should be corrected with sulfur.
- Watering : Water regularly , keeping the soil moist but not soggy. In containers, water every 5-7 days, more often during hot periods, checking the top 2-3 cm of soil.
- Temperature : Hardy in zones 4-8 (down to -29°C), suitable for temperate climates, including Romania. Protect containers in winter in colder areas by using mulch or moving them to a sheltered space.
Care and resistance
- Hardiness : Resistant to cold and most diseases, including anthracnose and gray mold , but can be affected by root rot in poorly drained soils. Not resistant to deer or birds, which may eat the fruit (use protective netting).
- Fertilization : Apply a fertilizer for acidophilic plants (e.g. 4-6-8) in March-April and June , avoiding excess nitrogen. Compost or well-rotted manure are beneficial.
- Pruning : Cut weak, dead or crossed branches in spring (February-March), keeping 6-8 main branches. After 3-4 years, remove older branches to stimulate fruiting.
- Pests and Diseases : May attract aphids, mites, or caterpillars. Inspect regularly and use insecticidal soap. Rotating soil in containers prevents the build-up of pathogens.
- Propagation : Propagated by softwood cuttings in summer or layering . Seeds are rarely used due to genetic variability.
