Tillandsia usneoides, commonly known as Spanish Moss, is the most iconic and versatile air plant. With its silvery cascading appearance, this epiphytic plant does not need soil and grows without roots, absorbing water and nutrients directly through its leaves. It is the perfect design element to add a "boho-chic" or urban jungle touch to any room.
🌿 Botanical characteristics:
Genus: Tillandsia (Air plants)
Family: Bromeliaceae
Appearance: long, hanging strands, gray-silver in color; texture is velvety due to "trichomes" (microscopic scales that capture water)
Growth: grows in chains that can branch; in nature, it hangs from trees, forming spectacular curtains
Flowers: produces very small, greenish-yellow flowers that can be easily overlooked but are often fragrant
☀️ Growing conditions:
Light: prefers bright, indirect (filtered) light; loves morning sun but must be protected from the harsh summer sun which can quickly dehydrate it
Watering: is a thirsty plant; it is recommended to fully submerge it in room temperature water for 10-20 minutes once a week; between soaks, mist it frequently (every 2-3 days)
Air circulation: ESSENTIAL! After watering, the plant should be gently shaken and left to dry in a very well-ventilated place; if it remains wet inside the clump, it can rot
Temperature: prefers warm temperatures (15-30°C); in winter, it should be protected from cold air or drafts
Important tip: Tillandsia usneoides changes color to intense green when wet and returns to gray-silver when dry. If you notice brown/dry strands inside the bunch, gently remove them; this is a normal renewal process or a sign that it needs more ventilation in the center of the tuft.
💚 Advantages and uses:
Hanging decor: looks stunning hanging on metal supports, pieces of wood, decorative wire, or simply hanging from a shelf
Flexible design: can be used to create "green walls," arrangements in open terrariums, or minimalist decorations
Pet Friendly: it is a safe plant for pets (although cats like to play with it, so place it out of reach)
Note: Being a natural product sold by the bunch, the volume and length of the strands may vary.
