Syringa vulgaris ‘Sensation’ is one of the most spectacular lilac varieties, appreciated for its unique, bicolor flowers in shades of violet-purple with white edges, a rare contrast found in lilacs. During spring, the shrub is covered with large and very fragrant panicles, becoming a true focal point of the garden.

The abundant blooming and intense, sweet fragrance, typical of traditional lilacs, make ‘Sensation’ an excellent choice for romantic gardens, solitary plantings, or fragrant hedges.

It is a classic ornamental shrub, hardy and easy to integrate into gardens, yards, pathways, relaxation areas, or compositions with other decorative shrubs.

Botanical Characteristics

  • Outdoor ornamental shrub with deciduous foliage.
  • Fragrant flowers grouped in decorative panicles.
  • Violet-purple petals clearly outlined with white edges.
  • Spring flowering, usually in April-May, depending on weather and location.
  • Green foliage with a natural look, typical of common lilac.
  • Suitable for solitary planting, decorative groups, informal hedges, or near paths and terraces.

Growing and Care Conditions

  • Light: prefers direct sunlight. For abundant flowering, placement in a bright location is recommended.
  • Watering: moderate. After planting, water regularly until established; afterwards, it tolerates normal dry periods well.
  • Soil: prefers fertile, well-drained soils, neutral to slightly alkaline. Does not appreciate heavy, compact, or permanently wet soils.
  • Fertilization: in spring, an ornamental shrub or flowering plant fertilizer can be applied.
  • Pruning: it is recommended to remove spent flowers immediately after blooming. Major pruning is also done after flowering, as lilac forms flower buds for the next year during the current season.
  • Cold resistance: very resistant to Romanian winters and suitable for permanent garden planting. It can tolerate temperatures around -25°C / -30°C, depending on location, plant maturity, and soil drainage.

Recommended Substrate

For garden planting, a well-loosened, fertile soil improved with mature compost is recommended. If the soil is clayey or retains water, incorporating coarse sand, perlite, fine gravel, or other drainage materials is advised.

For cultivation in large pots, a fertile substrate for outdoor plants mixed with perlite or pumice for better drainage can be used. Avoid very acidic substrates and excess water at the roots.
