Syringa vulgaris ‘Mme Lemoine’ is a classic and highly appreciated variety of garden lilac, renowned for its double, white, fragrant flowers. The inflorescences are abundant, elegant, and bright, offering a spectacular effect in spring, especially in romantic gardens, yards, pathways, or relaxation areas.

It is a hardy ornamental shrub with a classic appearance, ideal for permanent planting in the garden and for compositions with other lilac varieties in shades of purple, pink, or bluish.

Botanical Characteristics

  • Outdoor ornamental shrub with deciduous foliage.
  • Double, white, fragrant flowers, grouped in abundant panicles.
  • Buds may sometimes have a slight creamy-green tint, and the open flowers turn pure white.
  • Flowering occurs in spring, usually in April-May, depending on weather and location.
  • Green, natural foliage typical of common lilac.
  • Suitable for solitary planting, decorative groups, informal hedges, or near paths and terraces.

Growing and Care Conditions

  • Light: prefers direct sunlight. For abundant flowering, a bright location is recommended.
  • Watering: moderate. After planting, water regularly until established; afterward, it becomes quite tolerant of normal dry periods.
  • Soil: prefers fertile, well-drained soils, neutral to slightly alkaline. Does not appreciate compact, heavy, or permanently wet soils.
  • Fertilization: in spring, an ornamental shrub or flowering plant fertilizer can be applied.
  • Pruning: spent flowers can be removed immediately after flowering. Heavier pruning is also done after flowering, as lilac forms flower buds for the next year during the current season.
  • Cold resistance: very resistant to Romanian winters and suitable for permanent garden planting. It can tolerate temperatures around -25°C / -30°C, depending on location, plant maturity, and soil drainage.

Recommended Substrate

For garden planting, a well-loosened, fertile soil improved with mature compost is recommended. If the soil is clayey or retains water, incorporating coarse sand, fine gravel, perlite, or other drainage materials is advised.

For cultivation in large pots, a fertile substrate for outdoor plants mixed with perlite or pumice for better drainage can be used. Avoid very acidic substrates and excess water at the roots.

What Makes It Special

‘Mme Lemoine’ is one of the most elegant white lilac varieties, appreciated for its double, fragrant flowers and its clean, bright appearance. In the garden, it creates a very beautiful contrast next to purple or pink varieties and brings a classic, refined, old garden atmosphere.

It is a suitable choice for customers looking for a fragrant, hardy, and distinctive lilac, but in a color that is easy to integrate into any arrangement.
