Sambucus nigra 'Madonna', also known as black elder 'Madonna', is a variety with a dual role, being both decorative and productive. This plant is especially valued for its variegated leaves, with bright yellow edges that can add a splash of color to any garden.

The flowers of the elder 'Madonna' are used, as with other varieties, for teas, elderflower drinks, lemonades, etc. The fruits are also edible and can be used to make jams or wine, although it should be noted that they should be cooked before consumption, as raw fruits can be poisonous.

Like any elder, Sambucus nigra 'Madonna' is a very hardy and easy-to-grow plant that can tolerate a variety of soil and light conditions, although it prefers sunny or partly shaded places with well-drained soil.

Pot size: 17 cm

Height including pot: 50-80 cm (depending on the season)

Plants for garden or terrace are grown in unprotected spaces or with minimal protection (shade nets or hail nets). For this reason, naturally, they cannot have perfect foliage – leaves may show marks, defects, or other damage.

During the cold season, the plants enter a period of vegetative rest.
