Sansevieria masoniana (Whale Fin Snake Plant)
Sansevieria 'Masoniana' , also known by the popular name "Whale Fin" , is an impressive succulent plant in the Asparagaceae family, native to Central Africa (Democratic Republic of Congo). Its name comes from the shape of its large, wide, vertical leaves, which resemble a whale's dorsal fin .
🔹 Botanical characteristics:
• Habit: Herbaceous plant, medium to large, with a slow growth and vertical architecture. Usually has a single large leaf , but over time can produce multiple leaves or lateral shoots from the rhizome.
• Leaves: Very wide (up to 25–30 cm) and long (up to 1 meter), with a slightly rounded or pointed tip. The color is dark green , with irregular spots or streaks in lighter green. The edge of the leaf is smooth, and the surface is waxy, firm and shiny.
• Roots: Fleshy, underground rhizome, from which the plant can produce new shoots. The roots are thick and well adapted to retaining water.
• Flowers: Rarely seen in indoor cultivation. When it blooms, it produces a vertical inflorescence of small, fragrant, greenish-white flowers, similar to those of other Sansevierias.
🔹 Recommended growing conditions:
• Light: Prefers bright indirect light, but tolerates partial shade. Adapts well to indoor conditions, including artificial light. In intense natural light, the leaf retains its visible pattern and grows more harmoniously.
• Watering: Rarely and moderately. Allow the substrate to dry completely between waterings. In the cold season, watering is reduced even more. It is very drought-resistant, but sensitive to excess water.
• Soil: Well-drained substrate, recommended for cacti and succulents. Perlite or sand can be added to prevent water stagnation.
• Humidity: Tolerant of dry air, does not require high humidity. Does not require spraying.
• Fertilization: Reduced doses of fertilizer for succulents, applied rarely (once a month during the active period - spring-summer).
