Saintpaulia, commonly known as the African Violet, is one of the most beloved houseplants, appreciated for its compact growth, velvety leaves, and abundant flowering, which can occur repeatedly throughout the year under good growing conditions.

The flowers may be single, semi-double, or double and come in a wide variety of colors, from violet, blue, and pink to red, white, or bicolored combinations. The leaves are fleshy and velvety, green in color, and form a compact rosette that is highly decorative even outside the flowering period.

🌱 Botanical characteristics:

  • Name: Saintpaulia
  • Common name: African Violet
  • Family: Gesneriaceae
  • Plant type: perennial indoor plant, decorative for its flowers and leaves
  • Growth habit: compact, in the form of a rosette
  • Leaves: velvety, fleshy, green
  • Flowers: single, semi-double, or double
  • Colors: violet, blue, pink, red, white, and various combinations
  • Flowering: may flower repeatedly throughout the year under suitable conditions

💧 Growing conditions and care:

  • Light: prefers bright, indirect light; intense direct sunlight may cause leaf scorch
  • Temperature: ideally 18-24°C; should be protected from low temperatures and sudden temperature changes
  • Watering: moderate; allow the substrate to dry slightly on the surface between waterings
  • Watering method: bottom watering or watering directly at substrate level is recommended, avoiding water on the leaves and in the center of the rosette
  • Humidity: prefers moderate atmospheric humidity; direct misting of the leaves is not recommended
  • Substrate: light, airy, and well-draining, while still capable of retaining sufficient moisture for the fine roots
  • Fertilization: during the growing and flowering periods, a fertilizer for flowering plants may be applied periodically, following the recommended dosage
  • Repotting: should be carried out when the substrate has degraded or the plant has outgrown its pot; Saintpaulia prefers relatively compact pots

🌱 Secret Garden recommendation:

👉 For healthy root development, we recommend a fine, airy, and well-draining substrate suitable for plants with delicate root systems. It is important for the mix to retain sufficient moisture without remaining permanently wet, as excess water can promote root deterioration.

What makes it special:

  • abundant and repeated flowering under favorable conditions
  • a wide variety of flower colors and shapes
  • compact size, ideal for small spaces
  • velvety leaves that remain decorative even when the plant is not flowering
  • suitable for windowsills, desks, shelves, and indoor plant collections
  • takes up little space and can be successfully grown in small pots

📌 Note: Saintpaulia leaves are fragile and brittle and may suffer breaks or other cosmetic imperfections during handling and transport. These types of damage do not affect the plant's viability, and under suitable conditions it will produce new leaves.

The flowers and buds are also sensitive to transport and temperature changes and may fall after delivery.
