Rosa 'Totally Spice' is a modern rose, classified as a multiflora shrub rose (floribunda), in the Rosaceae family, prized for its pale pink double flowers and its intense, spicy fragrance. This cultivar combines the classic beauty of roses with hardiness and continuous flowering, making it ideal for ornamental gardens, borders, hedges or containers. Its name reflects the distinctive aroma, which adds a special charm.

Appearance of leaves and flowers

  • Leaves : The leaves are oval, serrated-edged, medium green, glossy, arranged alternately on the stems. The foliage is dense, healthy and moderately disease-resistant, providing an attractive backdrop for the flowers. In spring, the new leaves may have reddish hues.
  • Flowers : The flowers are semi-double, 8-10 cm in diameter, made up of 10-15 soft petals, pale pink or cyclamen. The fragrance is rich, with spicy notes, attracting pollinators. Flowering begins in May-June and continues in waves until autumn (September-October), producing flowers in clusters.

Growth characteristics

  • Height and width : Reaches 100-120 cm in height and 60-90 cm in width, forming a compact, well-branched shrub.
  • Vigor : Moderate growth, with sturdy, slightly thorny stems that support the flowers well. It is vigorous and adapts well to various conditions.
  • Type : Deciduous evergreen shrub, with leaves falling in winter.

Growing conditions

  • Exposure : Prefers full sun (6+ hours/day) for abundant flowering. Tolerates partial shade, but flowers will be fewer.
  • Soil : Grows in fertile, moist, well-drained soils with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0). Add compost at planting to improve fertility. Does not tolerate heavy or waterlogged soils.
  • Watering : Water regularly, keeping the soil moist but not soggy. Water deeply at the root, avoiding wetting the leaves, especially during dry periods or in the first year.
  • Temperature : Hardy in zones 5-9 (down to -23°C), suitable for temperate climates, including Romania. In severe winters, protect the base of the plant with mulch.

Care and resistance

  • Resistance : Moderately resistant to diseases such as black spot and powdery mildew, but requires monitoring. May be affected by aphids; treat with organic methods if necessary. Tolerates wind and rain well.
  • Fertilization : Apply a rose fertilizer (e.g. 10-10-10) in spring, when buds appear, and monthly through August. Avoid fertilizing in fall to prevent frost-sensitive growth.
  • Pruning : Prune in spring (March-April), removing dead, weak or crowded branches, and shortening healthy stems to 3-5 buds to stimulate flowering. Remove faded flowers to encourage new waves of blooms.
  • Propagation : Propagate by woody cuttings in autumn or by grafting. Seeds are not viable.

Rosa 'Totally Spice' is ideal for ornamental gardens, borders, low hedges or containers. Its pale pink, fragrant flowers add a delicate focal point, combining well with lavender, sage or white phlox. It is suitable for romantic gardens, modern landscapes or floral arrangements. They attract bees and butterflies, contributing to biodiversity.
