Rhipsalis crispata 'Amstel' is a decorative variety of epiphytic cactus, native to the tropical forests of South America, where it lives on the branches of trees, sheltering from direct sunlight. The plant forms long, green stems with wavy ("crisp") edges, which gracefully arch, creating a waterfall effect perfect for hanging pots or to decorate shelves and consoles.
Botanical characteristics:
Scientific name: Rhipsalis crispata 'Amstel'
Family: Cactaceae
Plant type: perennial epiphytic cactus
Habit: flowing, with segmented stems and wavy edges
Flowering: small, creamy-white flowers, discreetly scented, appear at the ends of the segments
Fruits: small, round, white or pink, which may appear after flowering
Growing conditions:
Light: bright indirect light; avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which can cause burns
Soil: aerated and well-drained substrate, preferably a mixture for epiphytic cacti (peat, perlite, shredded bark)
Watering: moderate; water when the surface of the substrate is dry to the touch, avoiding water stagnation
Optimum temperature: +18°C to +28°C; sensitive to cold, requires minimum +10°C
Humidity: appreciates a moderate to high level, typical of a tropical environment
Advantages and uses:
Special appearance due to the wavy edges of the segments
Ideal for hanging pots or high positions, where the flowing habit can develop freely
