Phalaenopsis cochlearis is an epiphytic or lithophytic botanical species in the Phalaenopsis genus (Orchidaceae family), described by Holttum in 1964. It is native to the Malay Peninsula and Borneo, where it usually grows on limestone at approximately 500-700 m.

Botanical characteristics:

  • Flowers: Approximately 4-5 cm in diameter. Pale yellow / cream, glossy, with rusty stripes at the base of the petals. The lip is a more intense golden yellow, with a concave median lobe shaped like a spoon (hence the name cochlearis). A few flowers grow on branched stems up to 50 cm long. It blooms in spring and summer, lasting 1-2 months.
  • Habit: Small to medium-sized plant, with 2-4 oblong-elliptic leaves up to 22 cm long.
  • Special features: A rare species, critically endangered in its habitat. Valued for the spoon-shaped lip and pale yellow color.
