Peperomia argyreia ‘Star Fruit’ (watermelon)
Peperomia argyreia, also known by the common name Peperomia Watermelon, is a highly appreciated indoor plant for its round and glossy leaves, with a distinctive pattern resembling the rind of a watermelon. It is a compact plant, easy to care for, perfect for modern interior decor.
🔹 Botanical characteristics:
• Form: Herbaceous plant, of small to medium size, with orderly growth and short, red stems. It forms a compact, round bush, ideal for decorative pots.
• Leaves: Rounded, fleshy, and glossy leaves, with a spectacular pattern: silver radial stripes on a dark green background, very similar to the watermelon pattern. They are attached to long, reddish petioles that stand out.
• Flowers: Occasionally produces thin, elongated inflorescences of green-cream color, which have no decorative value and can be removed to keep the plant aesthetic.
🔹 Recommended growing conditions:
• Light: Prefers bright indirect light. In insufficient light, the leaves may lose contrast and shape. Does not tolerate direct sunlight, which can burn the leaves.
• Watering: Moderate. Water when the top layer of the substrate is dry, avoiding overwatering. Responds well to a regular routine but suffers quickly in waterlogged soil.
• Soil: Aerated and well-drained. A substrate based on peat, perlite, and leaf soil is recommended.
• Temperature: Prefers constant temperatures, protected from cold drafts or sudden changes. Does not tolerate low temperatures.
• Humidity: Does well in moderate humidity but also benefits from light misting, especially in winter when the air is drier.
• Fertilization: Once a month during the warm season (spring–summer), with a mild fertilizer for green plants.
• Propagation: Easily propagated by leaf or stem cuttings, placed directly in moist soil or water.
• Maintenance: Low. It is recommended to wipe the leaves of dust and lightly prune if the plant becomes too bushy.
Peperomia argyreia is an indoor plant with a unique appearance, perfect for adding texture and color to any room. Its unique watermelon-like leaves make it a natural decorative piece, easy to maintain and safe for any home.
