Paraphalanthe Frida (Pplt. De La Salle × Pps. laycockii) - fragrant flowers
Paraphalanthe Frida (Pplt. De La Salle x Pps. laycockii) is an intergeneric hybrid belonging to the Orchidaceae family, recognized for the elegant appearance of its flowers and leaves. The plant develops epiphytically, compactly, being adapted to grow on the bark of trees, where the aerial roots capture moisture and nutrients from the environment.
The stems are short and may eventually form inconspicuous pseudobulbs, which store water and nutrients. The leaves are lanceolate, usually bright green, with a semi-coriaceous texture. They are arranged alternately and can reach moderate lengths, contributing to the compact appearance of the plant.
The flowers are large, fragrant, appearing in racemose inflorescences, supported by thin but resistant floral stems. The petals and sepals may present slightly different shades. The labellum (lip of the flower) is more pronounced, with distinct shapes and design, in shades of cyclamen red with yellow, attracting pollinators through color and shape.
Paraphalanthe Frida prefers filtered light conditions, avoiding direct exposure to intense sunlight. The ideal substrate must ensure good drainage, generally based on pine bark, sphagnum moss or other components that help maintain humidity without causing excessive water accumulation. Regular watering and fertilization, adapted to the growth rate, contribute to maintaining the health of the plant. During periods of rest, watering is reduced, to allow it to recover and initiate a new flowering cycle.
By combining the characteristics of the two parent species, this hybrid offers particularly attractive flowers and relatively easy growth, being appreciated by both orchid collectors and enthusiasts who want an ornamental plant in their collection.
