Orchid Paphiopedilum San Remo
This group of Paphiopedilum is present only in culture, being the result of selective crossings of botanical species and their hybrids. The known parental species for the American Hybrid group are Paphiopedilum insignie, P. gratrixianum, P. villosum, P. spicerianum, P. barbigerum, P. coccineum.
Contrary to expectations, this horticultural hybrid does not come from the United States of America. At the end of the 19th century, when the culture of paphiopediluma hybrids reached its peak, the first impediment appeared at the same time, represented by the outbreak of the first world war. The outbreak of the Second World War, which reminded enthusiasts of the losses previously suffered, caused the massive shipment of works of art, artifacts and other valuable collection items by the curators of museums and public and private collections to the United States of America, in the purpose of protecting them from potential destruction. This trend was also followed by numerous horticulturists concerned with hybridization from countries such as Great Britain, Denmark, France and even Germany. In this way, the USA became the largest depository of the most valuable collection elements from all over Europe.
