Oxalis vulcanicola 'Plum Crazy'
Oxalis vulcanicola 'Plum Crazy' is probably the most colorful and cheerful variety of "decorative clover" you can add to your collection. As its name ("Crazy") suggests, the foliage is a chaotic and stunning explosion of colors: an unpredictable mix of deep purple, neon pink, and fresh green, all on the same plant. It is an extremely expressive plant that brings a splash of vibrant color to any windowsill.
🌿 Botanical characteristics:
-
Genus: Oxalis
-
Family: Oxalidaceae
-
Foliage: spectacularly variegated; trifoliate leaves (clover-shaped) colored in irregular patches of purple, pink, and green; colors become more intense in strong light
-
Flowers: produces many small, bright yellow flowers that create a perfect contrast with the dark foliage
-
Behavior: it is a "moving" plant (nyctinasty) – in the evening or when cloudy, the leaves fold like little umbrellas, and in the morning in the sun they open wide again
-
Growth: has a slightly trailing habit, forming a lush bush that cascades beautifully over the edges of the pot
☀️ Growing conditions:
-
Light: loves strong light; the more light it receives (even a little gentle sun), the more vibrant the pink and purple colors will be; in shade, the leaves tend to become greener
-
Watering: moderate; let the surface layer of soil dry out between waterings; it is quite thirsty during the growing period but does not tolerate excess water at the roots
-
Temperature: prefers moderate temperatures (15-25°C); does not withstand frost, so it must be kept indoors during winter
-
Soil: a well-drained universal substrate is ideal
💚 Advantages and uses:
-
Fast growth: it is a vigorous plant that quickly fills the pot
-
Flowers all year: under good indoor conditions, it can bloom almost continuously
-
Ideal for hanging pots: due to its slightly trailing habit, it looks wonderful in hanging baskets or on high shelves
-
Interactivity: the day/night leaf movement makes it a fascinating plant to watch
Pet Warning: Plants of the Oxalis genus contain oxalic acid, which makes them toxic to pets if ingested in large amounts. We recommend placing them in locations difficult for cats or dogs to reach.
Winter tip: Unlike the classic bulb clover, 'Plum Crazy' does not naturally enter full dormancy (it does not lose all its leaves). If kept warm and in light, it will remain decorative throughout winter. If the plant thins out due to lack of light in the cold season, you can prune it short in spring to encourage a new, dense bush. Do not let the soil dry out completely!
Note: Transport sensitivity: Oxalis is a "dramatic" plant. It may arrive with folded or slightly wilted leaves after transport. Do not worry! Water it a little and place it in light; it will recover spectacularly within 24-48 hours. This variety may lose all its leaves after large temperature changes – but the foliage will regrow.
