Opuntia tomentosa - fructe comestibile
Opuntia tomentosa, known as the "Velvety Tree Pear" or "Woollyjoint Pricklypear," is a cactus native to Mexico, notable for its segmented stems in cladodes covered with soft hairs, giving it a velvety appearance. Its spines and small sharp glochids protect the plant from predators.
The flowers, red-orange in color, are striking and appear in spring and summer.
The fruits, oval-cylindrical in shape, measure 4-6 cm in diameter and are covered with a velvety skin, ranging from green to dark red. They are edible, with a sweet-tart taste, and are used in jams and juices. They are rich in fiber, vitamin C, and antioxidants, offering health benefits.
Opuntia tomentosa grows in the arid and semi-arid regions of Mexico, being drought-resistant and adapted to well-drained soils. It is a valuable species, providing food and shelter for local wildlife and used both for consumption and ornamental purposes.
