Malus 'Liset' is a small to medium-sized ornamental tree, originating from the Netherlands, developed in 1952 in The Hague by the horticulturist S.G.A. Doorenbos. This wild apple (crabapple) cultivar is valued for its decorative appearance throughout the year, thanks to its vibrant flowers, attractive fruits, and colorful foliage.
Physical characteristics
- Shape and size: The tree has a compact, dense, and rounded crown, with an open habit that allows light to pass through. At maturity, it reaches a height of about 4m.
- Leaves: The oval leaves appear in spring with a purplish hue, gradually turning dark bronze-green as the season progresses.
- Flowers: It blooms abundantly in late spring, producing crimson-red buds that open into fragrant flowers of intense pink-red, grouped in striking clusters.
- Fruits: After flowering, small cherry-like fruits appear, dark red in color, about 1.2 cm in diameter. They ripen in autumn and have a very attractive appearance. The fruits are edible and have an interesting taste.
Growing conditions
- Soil: Prefers moderately fertile, well-drained soils with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. It adapts to clayey, loamy, or sandy soils but does not tolerate excessive dryness.
- Light: Requires full sun for optimal flowering and fruiting, although it also tolerates partial shade.
- Watering and fertilizing: Needs regular watering, especially during dry periods, and fertilizing in spring with a balanced NPK fertilizer. Mulching is useful for maintaining moisture and controlling weeds.
Use in landscaping
Malus 'Liset' is ideal for parks, public gardens, or small gardens due to its compact size and ornamental value. Being a dwarf variety, it can be grown in containers.
