Malus 'Liset' is a small to medium-sized ornamental tree native to the Netherlands, developed in 1952 in The Hague by horticulturist SGA Doorenbos. This crabapple cultivar is prized for its year-round decorative appearance, due to its vibrant flowers, attractive fruit and colorful foliage.

Physical characteristics

  • Shape and size: The tree has a compact, dense and rounded crown, with an open canopy that allows light to enter. At maturity, it reaches a height of approx. 4m.
  • Leaves: Oval leaves appear in spring with a purple hue, gradually turning to dark bronze-green as the season progresses.
  • Flora: Blooms profusely in late spring, producing crimson-red buds that open into fragrant, deep pink-red flowers, grouped in spectacular clusters.
  • Fruits: After flowering, small, dark red, cherry-like fruits appear, about 1.2 cm in diameter. They ripen in autumn and have a very attractive appearance. The fruits are edible and have an interesting taste.

Growing conditions

  • Soil: Prefers moderately fertile, well-drained soils with a pH between 6.0 and 7.0. Adapts to clay, loamy or sandy soils, but does not tolerate excessive dryness.
  • Light: Requires full sun for optimal flowering and fruiting, although it also tolerates partial shade.
  • Watering and fertilization: It needs regular watering, especially during dry periods, and fertilization in spring with a balanced NPK fertilizer. Mulching is useful for maintaining moisture and controlling weeds.

Use in landscaping

Malus 'Liset' is ideal for parks, public gardens or small gardens, due to its compact size and ornamental value. Being a dwarf variety, it can be grown in containers.
