Lycium barbarum ‘New Big’, also known as Goji Berry ‘New Big’ or hedge wolfberry, is a highly valued fruit-bearing shrub known for its large, sweet, and nutrient-rich fruits. This variety is considered an improved version of the classic goji, standing out with larger berries, a more pleasant taste, and good productivity. It is an excellent choice for edible gardens in Romania due to its adaptability, good resistance, and relatively easy maintenance.

Besides its nutritional value, the plant also has an attractive decorative appearance: arching branches, fine foliage, lilac-purple flowers, and red-orange fruits that ripen gradually from summer to autumn. The fruits can be eaten fresh, dried, in teas, jams, juices, or desserts and are appreciated for their high content of antioxidants, vitamins, and other valuable compounds.

🌱 Botanical characteristics:

  • Family: Solanaceae
  • Plant type: outdoor fruit-bearing shrub
  • Common names: goji, hedge wolfberry, wolfberry
  • Growth habit: vigorous, fast-growing, arching and flexible branches, easy to train on supports
  • Leaves: small, lance-shaped, gray-green, grouped
  • Flowers: small, lilac-purple, bell-shaped, appear from summer and attract pollinators
  • Fruits: elongated, large for this type of plant, red-orange at maturity, sweet with slight acidity
  • Overall appearance: decorative and useful at the same time, suitable for edible gardens, productive hedges, or espaliers

💧 Growing and care conditions:

  • Light: prefers full sun for good flowering and abundant fruiting; tolerates partial shade but production may be lower
  • Watering: moderate; regular watering is recommended during the first year after planting, then the plant becomes more drought tolerant
  • Soil: well-drained, loose, loamy-sandy or even poorer; does not tolerate stagnant excess water
  • Humidity: prefers soil with moderate moisture, without waterlogging at the roots
  • Temperature: well adapted for outdoor growth in Romania’s climate
  • Maintenance: pruning is recommended during the dormant period to control shape, stimulate branching and fruiting; can also be grown on supports

  • is a decorative shrub with delicate flowers and brightly colored fruits

📌 Note: Depending on the season, the plant may be delivered with or without leaves, with or without flowers, or without fruits, and its appearance can vary significantly between the growing season and dormancy. After transport, some tips, leaves, or branches may show minor handling marks or slight superficial dehydration. These aspects are normal and do not affect the plant’s viability.

Frost resistance: down to approximately -20°C or even lower under good conditions; in pots, additional winter protection is required.
