Hydrangea anomala ssp. petiolaris, also known as climbing hydrangea, is a perennial woody plant native to East Asia, especially Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. This plant belongs to the Hydrangeaceae family and is characterized by its ability to climb vertical surfaces such as walls, fences, or tree trunks.

The climbing hydrangea grows as a shrub and can reach heights of up to 9-12 meters when grown under good conditions. Its leaves are oval, dark green, with serrated edges, and the small flowers are grouped in large inflorescences similar to those of other hydrangea species. The flowers are white or cream, with a delicate and elegant appearance, blooming in the summer, offering a remarkable visual display.

Hydrangea anomala ssp. petiolaris is a hardy and easy-to-care-for plant. It prefers locations with partial shade or semi-shade and well-drained, humus-rich soils. This hydrangea species needs a support to climb on (fences, pergolas, etc.) and can attach to vertical surfaces using aerial roots.

Garden or terrace plants are grown in unprotected spaces or with minimal protection (shade nets or hail nets). For this reason, naturally, they may not have perfect foliage – leaves may show marks, defects, or other damage.

During the cold season, the plants go dormant, are pruned, and are leafless.
