Hydrangea anomala ssp. petiolaris, also known as the climbing hydrangea, is a perennial, woody plant native to eastern Asia, particularly Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. This plant is part of the Hydrangeaceae family and is characterized by its ability to climb vertical surfaces, such as walls, fences, or tree trunks.

The climbing hydrangea grows in the form of a bush and can reach heights of up to 9-12 meters when cultivated in good conditions. Its leaves are oval, dark green, with toothed edges, and the flowers are grouped in large inflorescences, similar to those of other hydrangeas. The flowers are white or cream, with a delicate and elegant appearance, and appear in the summer, offering a special visual spectacle.

Hydrangea anomala ssp. petiolaris is a hardy and easy-care plant. It prefers semi-shade or partial shade and well-drained, humus-rich soils. This hydrangea species needs a support to climb (fences, pergolas, etc.) and can attach to vertical surfaces with the help of aerial roots.

Plants for the garden or terrace are grown in unprotected spaces or with minimal protection (shade nets or anti-hail nets). For this reason, naturally, they cannot have perfect foliage - the leaves may show marks, defects or other damage.

In the cold season, the plants go dormant, are shortened and are leafless.
