Hoya wayetii is an epiphytic vine native to the Philippines, recognized by its narrow, fleshy, boat-shaped foliage. The margins darken or turn red in bright light. Each pot contains 2 or more plants at different stages of development. Vine length varies. Under good growing conditions, compact umbels of small, red-burgundy, pubescent flowers with a honey-like fragrance may appear. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Foliage. The leaves are elongated, thick, and slightly concave. The leaf blade remains green. The contrasting edge appears when light levels are good. New shoots may have a reddish tint. The growth habit is trailing or climbing. Vine length varies from one specimen to another.

Flowers and fragrance. The flowers are small, pubescent, and grouped in dense umbels. Their color ranges from dark red to burgundy, with a darker corona. The fragrance is sweet and described in cultivation as honey-like. The flowers last for several days, depending on the microclimate. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.

Identity. The accepted botanical name is Hoya wayetii Kloppenb., native to northern Luzon. It is known as a “cactus hoya” because of its fleshy foliage, not because it requires a cactus watering routine. The species is frequently confused with Hoya kentiana, Hoya angustifolia, and Hoya longifolia; these are not synonyms. They can be distinguished by the shape of the leaves, peduncles, and flower color. Zambales and is not the variegated form.
