Hoya imperialis 'Red' is a selection of the species Hoya imperialis, an epiphytic vine from Southeast Asia, with some of the largest flowers in the genus. The foliage is elliptic-oblong, thick, glossy, and green, with a prominent midrib and sometimes slightly wavy margins. The waxy, star-shaped, cup-like flowers appear in umbels and feature burgundy-red tones with a cream corona. They are fragrant, especially in the evening and morning. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.
Foliage and growth. The leaves are thick, leathery, elliptic-oblong, with a glossy surface and prominent central vein. The margin may be slightly wavy. The stem becomes more rigid as it matures and supports heavy inflorescences. A young specimen appears as a short vine on a support, rather than having the long growth habit of a mature plant.
Flowers and fragrance. The flowers have a slightly cup-shaped, star-like corolla approximately 7–9 cm across, in dark red or burgundy-red tones, with a cream corona. An inflorescence may contain up to 19 flowers. In this batch, there are four open, waxy flowers with visible nectar. Horticultural sources describe a fresh fragrance, perceived especially at night and in the morning. The flowers may produce sticky nectar. Flowering depends on the plant’s maturity and growing conditions.
Identity. The accepted botanical name of the species is Hoya imperialis Lindl., published in 1846. Native range: from the Thai Peninsula to western and central Malesia (Thailand, Malaya, Sumatra, Java, Borneo, the Philippines). It is an epiphyte of the humid tropical biome. 'Red' is a commercial horticultural label for the form with red flowers.
