Helleborus orientalis ‘Hello Red’ (spanz)
Helleborus is one of the easiest garden plants to care for, and its ability to bloom in the darkest months of the year, when everything is frozen, is remarkable.
Helleborus, also known as Spanz, will produce flowers from late autumn until early spring, hence the names Winter Rose or Christmas Rose, Spanz.
Description:

- Blooming period: Blooms in winter or early spring, sometimes even when the ground is covered with snow.
- Size: Grows up to 30-45 cm in height and spreads about 60 cm in width.
- Origin: Native to the southern regions of Europe and Asia.
Care:
-
Light:
- Prefers partial shade or half-shadow. Ideal for planting under trees or in areas protected from strong direct sunlight.
- Can tolerate direct sun in regions with milder summers but needs shade in warmer areas.
-
Soil:
- Needs well-drained soil, rich in humus, and slightly alkaline. Clay soil is ideal.
-
Watering:
- Keeping the soil slightly moist is essential, especially during warm and dry periods.
- Avoid overwatering, which can cause root rot.
-
Temperature:
- Very frost-hardy, tolerating temperatures down to -15°C or even lower.
- Thrives in temperate zones but should be protected during severe frosts.
-
Fertilizing:
- Apply compost or organic fertilizer each spring to keep the soil nutrient-rich.
- Avoid fertilizers high in nitrogen, which can overly encourage leaf growth at the expense of flowers.
-
Pruning:
- Remove dry or damaged leaves in late autumn or early spring to encourage new leaves and flowers.
- Cutting old leaves helps prevent fungal diseases.
-
Humidity:
- Although it tolerates moderate humidity, good air circulation is important to prevent diseases.
