Galium odoratum (Lemn Dulce)
Galium odoratum, commonly known as Sweet Woodruff or Woodruff, is a creeping perennial plant native to Europe and Asia. It is highly valued for its aromatic leaves and characteristic sweet fragrance.
It grows quickly, forming dense mats 15-30 cm tall. The leaves are lance-shaped, dark green, arranged in whorls of 6-9 leaves. In spring, small white star-shaped flowers appear, grouped in small inflorescences. It has a sweet and pleasant scent of vanilla and fresh hay, which becomes more intense as the leaves dry slightly.
Galium odoratum is also highly appreciated for its aromatic and traditional uses. The dried leaves have a sweet, pleasant vanilla and fresh hay scent and have been used for centuries to prepare aromatic teas, the classic "May wine" drink, or to naturally scent drawers, wardrobes, and linens. In Europe, it is considered a natural calming, digestive, and mild sedative remedy.
