Fuji Sand is a pure volcanic material, extracted from the Fuji mountain area (Japan), used by Japanese growers in traditional bonsai mixes. Its granular appearance and dark gray color provide not only an aesthetic texture but also excellent stability and drainage for the roots.
Origin: volcanic (Fuji area, Japan)
Composition: naturally crushed solidified lava
Texture: hard, irregular, porous granules
Color: dark gray to black, elegant natural appearance
pH: neutral to slightly acidic
Ensures excellent drainage and constant aeration of the roots
Does not decompose over time, maintaining a stable substrate structure
Provides appropriate weight for securing bonsai in pots
Reduces the risk of root rot and maintains root system health
Can be used as a drainage layer or mixed with Akadama, Kiryuzuna, or Karu Ishi
Although primarily designed for bonsai cultivation, Fuji Sand can also be used with excellent results for other types of plants:
Cacti and succulents: for a very aerated substrate and quick drainage
Epiphytic orchids (Hoya, Dendrobium, Oncidium): for stability and additional drainage
Indoor tropical plants (Philodendron, Monstera, Alocasia, Anthurium): mixed with peat and coconut fiber to prevent substrate compaction
Carnivorous plants: in small amounts, as a drainage material in acidic substrates
Can be used as a drainage layer or mixed with other substrates, in proportions of 10โ40%, depending on the plant.
Can also be applied as a decorative layer on the surface of the pot, providing a natural, clean, and tidy appearance.
Note: Fuji Sand is a 100% natural product, without artificial additives. Granulation and color may vary slightly depending on the volcanic origin batch.
The substrate is sold in bulk, in 2l bags (packaged in the greenhouse).
Note for international orders: Adding soil products to international orders will increase your shipping costs due to extra weight charges. For each piece you will need to pay an extra cost of 10 Ron (~2 Eur).
