Frailea castanea
Frailea castanea is a small-sized cactus species, native to the arid regions of South America, especially Brazil and Uruguay. It is valued by cactus collectors for its compact shape and its striking yellow flowers. Frailea castanea is easy to care for, being a succulent plant that does not require excessive attention.
Description
Shape: Frailea castanea is a small, globular cactus, about 3-5 cm in diameter. It has a dark brown color, hence the name "castanea," reminiscent of chestnuts.
Ribs: The surface of the cactus is divided into 13-15 well-defined ribs, with small tubercles on which very fine or almost nonexistent spines grow.
Flowers: The flowers are bright yellow and relatively large compared to the size of the plant, reaching 3-4 cm in diameter. The flowers rarely open fully and, in many cases, the plant can form fruit through self-pollination before the flowers open.
Care
Light: Frailea castanea prefers strong but filtered light. Place it near a well-lit window or in a spot where it can receive indirect light.
Temperature: This plant prefers warm temperatures, between 20-30°C during the active growth period (spring-summer). During the resting period (autumn-winter), it is best to keep it in a cooler place, with temperatures around 10-15°C. Frailea castanea does not tolerate frost, so it should be brought indoors during the cold season if kept outside.
Watering: During the growth period (spring and summer), water the plant moderately, allowing the soil to dry completely between waterings. As with many cacti, excess water can lead to root rot. During the resting period (autumn and winter), significantly reduce watering or stop it completely, depending on the temperature of the environment where the plant is kept.
Soil: Use well-drained soil, specific for cacti and succulents. An ideal mix can include potting soil, coarse sand, and perlite to ensure good drainage and prevent excessive water retention. It is important that the pot has drainage holes to prevent water stagnation at the base.
Fertilizing: Fertilize the cactus once a month during the active growth period, using a fertilizer specially made for cacti, which is low in nitrogen and rich in phosphorus and potassium. During winter, fertilizing is not necessary as the plant is dormant.
Repotting: Frailea castanea does not require frequent repotting, as it grows very slowly. Repot it every 2-3 years, using a suitably sized pot with fresh, well-drained soil. The ideal time for repotting is spring, before the start of the active growth period.
Common problems:
Root rot: This problem usually occurs due to overwatering or insufficient drainage. It is important to allow the soil to dry completely between waterings.
Lack of flowering: If the plant does not flower, it may be due to lack of light or unsuitable temperatures. Provide it with a well-lit environment and a resting period during winter.
Pests: Frailea castanea can be affected by scale insects and aphids. Treat infestations with insecticide specially made for cacti or use organic methods, such as insecticidal soap.
