Ficus carica 'Domenico Tauro', a fig variety developed by the Italian gardener Domenico Tauro in the 19th century, is today one of the most valued fig types worldwide. Known for its large fruits from the first harvest, which can exceed 200 grams, this fig is considered a standard among fig varieties. The first harvest takes place in July-August, followed by a second harvest in September-October, consisting of smaller fruits, weighing 70-80 grams, which are sweeter and more fragrant than those from summer.

This variety is mainly produced in the regions of Terlizzi, Ruvo, Molfetta, and Giovinazzo.

Other known names: Fiorone nero di Terlizzi, Fico di Terlizzi, Fiorone Nero

A variety with two fruitings per year - the first yield brings fewer and larger fruits, while the second brings a more abundant harvest with smaller but sweeter fruits.

It is possible for this variety to bear fruit 2-3 years after planting. Usually, in the first years, it develops its root and leaf mass. Fruits in the first years will not always have the specific characteristics - usually, the plant reaches its full potential as it approaches maturity.

Garden hardiness. It withstands down to -20°C without significant losses. Hardiness increases as the plant matures, the root system develops, and the branches thicken. It is recommended to protect the plants in the first years by wrapping them with microporous film (frost protection film, Agril-type film, etc.). Frost cases in fig trees cause damage to the above-ground parts - however, the root remains alive, and the plant resumes growth in spring.

Resistance to diseases and pests. Fig trees are considered ‘pest free’.

Parthenocarpic variety - it is self-fertile and does not require a pollinator.

The plant height is measured including the pot.

Plants for garden or terrace are grown in unprotected spaces or with minimal protection (shade nets or hail nets). For this reason, naturally, they cannot have perfect foliage - leaves may show marks, defects, or other damage.

During the cold season, plants enter a period of vegetative rest.
