Epiphyllum 'Sarah Courant' (orchid cactus)

Epiphyllum 'Sarah Courant' is a spectacular variety of epiphytic cactus , appreciated for its large, intensely colored flowers and lush tropical appearance. It is part of the "orchid cactus" category (Epiphyllum hybrid), being cultivated mainly for its impressive flowering and elegant stem shape.

🔹 Botanical characteristics:

• Habit: Epiphytic plant with flat, long, arching stems , without thorns, that grow in a cascade shape. It is ideal for hanging pots or large planters, from where it can naturally display its growth.

• Stems (cladodes): Green, broad and flattened, with slightly notched edges. They can reach lengths of over 60–100 cm , becoming increasingly arched as the plant matures.

• Flowers: Very large, 15–20 cm in diameter, with long, pointed petals arranged in several layers. The color is intense – bright magenta-pink , with light tones towards the center and slightly darker outer petals. The flowers are ephemeral (lasting 1–2 days), but extremely visible and appear in waves in spring and summer .

• Fragrance: Some specimens may emit a slightly sweet fragrance, especially in the evening.

🔹 Recommended growing conditions:

• Light: Prefers bright indirect light . Mild morning sun is beneficial, but avoid strong midday sun which can burn the stems.

• Soil: Aerated and well-drained. A mixture for epiphytic plants is recommended: peat + shredded bark + perlite or a suitable orchid substrate.

• Watering: Moderate. Water when the soil has dried slightly on the surface. During the dormant period (autumn-winter), watering is significantly reduced.

• Humidity: Prefers medium to high humidity , but tolerates dry indoor air if kept away from direct heat sources.

• Temperature: The ideal is a warm, stable one. It does not tolerate temperatures below 10°C . In winter, it is recommended to keep it in protected or bright indoor spaces.

• Fertilization: During the growing season (spring–summer), fertilize every 2–4 weeks with fertilizer for flowering plants.
