Edgeworthia chrysantha ‘Grandiflora’ – paperbush shrub with fragrant golden-yellow flowers
Edgeworthia chrysantha 'Grandiflora' (also known as Paperbush or paper shrub) is a deciduous shrub prized for its very early flowering and intense fragrance. The 'Grandiflora' variety stands out for its larger flowers and inflorescences, as well as its sturdier stems compared with the basic type.
The flowers appear in late winter to early spring, on branches that are still bare. They are tubular, intensely yellow on the inside, with a silky, whitish exterior, grouped in dense, rounded clusters. The fragrance is strong and sweet, with notes of jasmine and honeysuckle. The leaves emerge after flowering; they are broad and deep green, then fall in autumn. The bark is soft, flexible, and brownish.
Key characteristics:
- Yellow, intensely fragrant flowers on bare branches
- Very early flowering (late winter to spring)
- Larger inflorescences than the basic type
- Compact, bushy form
- Size: usually 1–1.5 m (occasionally up to 2 m)
Easy care:
- Light: partial sun or bright partial shade. It prefers a position sheltered from cold, dry winds.
- Temperature: moderately frost-hardy (approx. -12…-15°C). In colder areas, it needs a sheltered position and possibly winter protection.
- Watering: keep the soil slightly moist, especially during warm periods. It does not tolerate standing water.
- Soil: rich in humus, well drained, preferably slightly acidic or neutral.
- Pruning: minimal. Prune only to remove dry shoots or to correct the shape.
Uses:
Excellent as a solitary specimen beside paths, terraces, or entrances, where its fragrance can be appreciated up close. Suitable for winter gardens, collector's gardens, or sheltered areas. It provides special interest during the period when most plants are dormant.
A collector's shrub with early flowering and an intense fragrance, ideal for gardens with milder winters or sheltered positions.
⚠️ Note: For harsh Romanian winters, planting in sheltered locations and protecting the base with a layer of mulch is recommended.
Height including pot: approx. 35–40 cm
